[=1][=Black][ 4]While a lot of recreational boards have gotten short and stubby - fish like, I have been working with longer, more narrow boards that tend to have more of a “banana” shape. A few old timers (at this point two) have mentioned these boards look like a design that was popular out of central Florida a few years back made by a guy called Peck? and he called the model the peck penetrater. Be interested in this designer and board, any info. . .[/][/] [/]
Ah yes,
The Peck Penetrator. John Peck, of early Pipeline, rail grab fame. (1963/64) The model was marketed by Tom Morey, as I remember. I would be surprised if Peck actually “designed” the board at that time. At one time Peck was so full of himself that he has a T-shirt with “Yes, I’m John Peck” emblazoned across it. I don’t know much about the specifics of the design. As I remember there was not anything in particular that set it apart from other boards at that time, other than the model name, which I thought was a good one. I think the model dated from around 66/67.
Hey Shine, I still have a nice 9’4’’ Peck Penatrator , from what I remember John did design it . They did have down rails in the nose and a rounder bottom in the tail. John got 3rd in the world contest in 1966 in San Diego on one I think? Mine really flys on the nose.
That and an old Yater spoon I salvaged from someones junk heap were my all time favorite long boards. The Penetrator had amazing control from the tip. Tended to spin out if you pushed a hard turn in jiuce from the tail but the front half of the board was a dream. Get up there and stay there on almost any SoCal wave (almost). I don’t recall other boards of the day having the toilet seat down rails in the nose that one had
The G&S Hynson Strech model had down rails in the nose.Your right Dr. the Yaters were better all around boards.
The Penetrator was designed by Tom Morey and John Peck. Was made in the sixties, 66-67, by the Morey Pope Company. John currently has a signature model that is available through him personally or via Walden Surfboards. The board is different than any other board on the market then or now. It’s an integrated foil, rocker, and outline thing.
I have an original one.Great noserider.Very different board.Best $20 I ever spent.
Found this photo of a Penetrator – cool.
Well, if you’re interested, you can actually see John Peck, at his 60’s, riding his Penetrator model at Swamys. Just get a copy of “RIDING WAVES (DVD)”, he appears in the last chapter.
Give it a chance.
