Has anyone expiremented with photoilluminescent powders and epoxy finishes for their boards? How does it react with the resin and what are the products you are using?
I have seen the LED boards but I am not impressed because they require energy input. The PI interacts with the sun and achieves the same end. I dont know how toxic the stuff is but it looks like it could be hazardous. I am wondering if it works successfully with Super Sap resin.
Also, in the general opinion, does this make the user shark bait?
Shark, maybe not. Kraken, for sure!
That was really my worry but I did not think many others would know about the kraken.
Chip/Ben from Oz has layed up fins with glow in the dark powder. Try pming him. If you do, tell him I said hello.
I have a small bag of that glow powder and I’m excited to try it out as well. I think I’m going to test it first before I use it on a board. Maybe I’ll use it for pinlines or leash plug install. I have seen it on a board that was just posted on instagram so I guess it can work.
I am hoping someone will comment with experience how the resin reacts with the added powder. I am guessing it alters the epoxy reaction, just a hunch.
Should make the board go faster. At nite anyway. Only drawback might be that if you store the board in you bedroom; the neon might keep you awake. I envision a room with a pole in it. Your Neon board leaning against the wall and some half naked woman swinging around on the pole. Maybe getting Phaelic with your Neon Surfboard. Lowel
Lowel, is this what you had in mind?
We’re on the same page. Good luck with your project.
http://solarcolordust.com check these guys out, they have all kind of photoreactive and thermoreactive pigments. fiberglass hawaii also sells glow powder to make resins photoreactive. for both of these i suppose they weaken the resin matrix (like any color additive in any resin does), but not to the point where it compromises strength. i havent noticed any excess dings or increased likelyhood catastrophic buckles. you can always use these things in a little resin and cabosil to do a foam stain or seal on the blank, then glass over with clear uncolored resin. boom. the color you want, and an uncompromised laminate
I like the under coat idea.
I just bought some at my resin shop, and holy canoli is it expensive! $25 for a 100g. It also sounds deadly like opening up a fluorescent light bulb for the powder.
I am going to expirement with it in white glue for my glue ups and super sap resin. I will post pics and results.
