Yesterday was the SUP portion of the Quiksilver Makahiki contest at Makaha… What a great event that is! Quiksilver puts on the entire event for free. Free entry, free food etc… The only thing they ask is canned goods that they donate to the needy around Hawaii and you even get a T-Shirt… They also have a Pro-Am Longboard division, Tandem and Canoe Surfing… To top it all off, the waves were sooooooo nice!!!
The level of surfing was crazy good!!! Everyone was ripping… My heat was the 4th which I wasn’t really in the groove and even left the water early to take pictures… Hee hee! Kinda shows where my mind was… Hey, I got a brand new Canon20D… Last thing I wanna do is surf all day when I get to take pics of so many ripping SUP surfers! 1/2 of them riding our boards so I wanted to get pics for our site… In the end out of 36 competitors, 4th place went to Dave Kalama, 3rd to Leleo Kinimaka, 2nd to Ned Snow, and 1st place went to Bonga Perkins who was absolutely killing it on a 9’-6" Parmenter…
Here’s a bunch of pics for those of you interested in State of the Art SUP surfing… Excuse my photo quality as I loaded them in very low resolution… Aloha… BC
Winner Bonga Perkins…
Brian Keaulana inside, Dave Parmenter outside…
Believe it or not, this girl charges bigger waves than most men… I’m stoked she enjoyed my stick…
Ned Snow on a beauty…
Titus Kinimaka on a new board I shaped for him… I’m stoked he’s stoked on it…
Dave Parmenter stoked!! Waves got really good…
Bonga on the way out and Parmenter on the way in…
After the cutback…
Nolan Keaulana was ripping backside turns…
Dave Kalama with a very critical powerful bottom turn…
Todd Bradley
Leleo Kinimaka on my old 9’-2"
After a few radical turns on the outside, Leleo pulled into this, came out,
pulled in again, came out again and went straight into the finals…
Kamaki Worthington was surfing unreal on a Surftech Mickey Munoz 12 footer…
More to come…
