i got this pic off of second light. looks like a murky waimeia shore break.the pic is matt kechle and i think its at the pump house.
here is a link to the video http://inletsurf.com/05pumphouse.html
it is pumphouse…on sunday. i was surfing reef road when i saw some friends heading out to pumphouse on a waverunner for a tow-in session. i joined up with them when the wind started to come onshore. it was nuts.
Sorry to be such a kook, but was no one trying to paddle in there? Not like it was to big - Kind of crappy, and heavy, but looked paddleable. Now the picture ambrose posted… Hmm, That type of wave is another world. Looked at the surfline site, looked at a video of tow in in centro much bigger than the Florida swell, but still looked like stuff people would paddle into.
Is it just me or is there something else going on??? Maybe I’m jelous, 'cuz one thing I realize, if paddlers aren’t around, then you and your tow crew could get so many waves…
we were all paddling in at reef road. florida has no “tow-in” spots (for obvious reasons), but the wave was breaking really funky at pumphouse that day. they were pretty crossed up, and some waves were perfectly makeable paddling in, but a lot of 'em would’ve worked ya over pretty bad…and the bottom there is all rocks…SHARP rocks. i’ve never surfed there without seeing people walking back up the beach gushing blood all over their backs. also, on sunday, it would’ve been very difficult to paddle out into the lineup. skis were definitely the way to go. besides…it’s a fun gimmick, and it makes for a cool camera shot.
hey Taylor this is one of my local spots…what u dont see is the crazy currents and the rock jetty that the wave breaks in front of…you miss the drop and youre in serious trouble…dont believe the fish stories…is youre not geared up right, arent experienced in big heavies and dont have guts you shouldnt be out there…oh yeah, its also shark infested…
Well, well, well - What a trip - that is a lot of stuff to consider. It makes me think about how towing could open up lots of very funky spots - Still lots to consider 'cuz it seems if things went wrong, they’d go really wrong, really fast. Such a trip to compare these types of surfs with those here who love a nice longboard ride on a clean mellow day… Thanks for putting up w/my cynical kook crap you guys.
Yea, everything Meecrafty said is true about the place. Wild currents, rocks, a jetty right in the way and sharks… lots of them. We wanted to ride it years ago but it would take the special swell, the special board, the right wind conditions, incoming tide, etc. Just never lined all those things up at once. Kech did and slayed that beast. Hats off to Matt. I heard his tow in partners jet ski got broken in half… some power there?
Now on to even bigger fish… outside shoals at Stuart Inlet, outside sholes off Cape Canaveral and then the real biggy Cape Hatteras shoals. I’ve seen that maybe 50 ft.
well that one cruise ship got hit by a 70 ft wave off the coast of the carolinas last week. the size is out there its just doesnt come around very often.
Please, check some pics taken by a Brazilian who lives in Florida in http://www.waves.com.br.
“We wanted to ride it years ago but it would take the special swell, the special board, the right wind conditions, incoming tide, etc. Just never lined all those things up at once.”
How many here could tell that story… “This one spot… if only…” Be cool to hear stories like that, w/photos, and then the stories of first success -w/photos (Specially for Ben/Chipfishster!)
" heard his tow in partners jet ski got broken in half… some power there? "
“Money, honey, is something I’d like to uderstand…” Some old blues guy in a song about being broke and hungry. Seriously $$$$
