Pictures of my #002 and #003-- El huevon y el heuvito

Aloha Gang,

Attached are some pictures of second and third boards that I have shaped/glassed/sanded. Nothing that special really, but I figured I’d share them with the community as us newbies need to stick together!

I actually built #'s 002, 003, and 004 at the same time, but I don’t have pictures of #004 right now as it lives in Santa Cruz and I’m currently in Brooklyn. My landlord in SC doesn’t want me to shape in his house, so I’ve been doing all of my shaping in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where I spend about a third of my time. I have a good friend who’s an artist (as well as a budding surfer) and he lets me shape in his studio in exchange for board rights. My shaping space there is pretty ghetto (actually I’ll be posting a build thread for a fish I’m making pretty soon if you are interested in pictures), but there’s something about it that’s really roots. Actually there’s something about surfing in NY and the northeast in general that is pretty roots, but that’s a different topic altogether.

These boards here were built as gifts for my artist friend and his lovely girlfriend. #002 was built for the lady. She’s just a baby surfer, but really loves it, and has been out surfing now probably 30 or so times in various locales from Kauai to CR. I’ve surfed with her in Santa Cruz a bit, and have watched her reliably get to her feet on logs, and go down the line pretty well. She’s light weight (probably 115lbs) and limber, so I wanted to build her a board that she could progress on, move from point A to point B with ease, as well as not be too large as storage space is at a premium here in NYC. What I came up with is this egg (I call it a huevon). It’s 6’10’’ x 24’’ x 2 3/8’’ – so super wide but with racy enough rails that cranking a turn shouldn’t be hard for her. Also I put a thruster setup on it to facilitate loose turning. I thought about going with a 2+1 setup, but I’m more of a thruster guy myself.

This was my second glass job ever and my first tint. I was trying to go for that seafoam retro tint thing but it didn’t go all that great. In particular I had problems with the evenness of the color (as you can see). Also I didn’t anticipate that the football patches that I put around the fin boxes would come out so different in color. Oh well, live and learn.

Here’s a close-up shot of the deck laminate that I made. I’ve always been a really big fan of Ernst Haeckel’s scientific illustrations, so both of these boards feature rice paper “logos” that I made from adapted images of his. I think they look really good.

Ok so on to el heuvito. This board was built as a gift to my artist friend, who is himself a pretty novice surfer. He’s been surfing for a few years now, but only surfs when he’s traveling (for some reason he hates cold water- go figure). I’ve surfed with him a bit, and he’s pretty decent on a log, but wants to get going on a shorter board. Again he’s a light weight, probably 5’6’’ 135lbs, and athletic. I made for him an little eggy hybrid thing that I based loosely off of a template that I took from a magic little Takayama board that I ride from time to time. El huevito measures in at 6’4’’ x 21 x 2 1/2. This one was made as a thruster (as is my Takayama), but I’ve also made this same board as a quad (my #004) and it rips with that fin setup. I’m yet to ride the thruster version though. This board has pretty soft rails through out, with an eye on being forgiving for the rider. Anyway here are some pictures.

Here’s one more picture of the tail del heuvito. I’m currently at work on my #005 which will be a gift to my soon-to-be sister-in-law. I’ve taken a bunch of pictures for a build thread, so keep your eye out for it!

As if I haven’t been verbose enough, let me add my most sincere thanks to the whole Swaylocks community. You guys rock and I couldn’t have even made these tiny baby steps without you!

cheers,

Andy
