Pigment Supply

Where are you guys buying resin pigments? I see several of the suppliers online like Fiberglass Supply, SurfSource etc. offering repackaged pints etc of various pigments. I’m looking for both tints and opaques if possible in something more economical than Everlast 1 oz. tubes from the boat supply shop. Got any favorites? Thanks. Tom Sterne

I buy mine from Fiberglass Supply . Opacity usually depends on the specific color and how much you put in the resin. The red works well on its own but with the Blue I bought (I don’t remember exactly which shade of blue it is, sort of a navy but I think it has a different name) I have found that to make it opaque I have to add white which makes more of a pastel blue. I usually add white to the yellow too for opaque jobs although I’m not sure it really needs white added to it, I use it more to tone down the yellow hue since the pigment is more of a golden color than a sunshine yellow. If I remember right Doug gets the pigments from Lilly. Good Luck. Matthew Weaver>>> Where are you guys buying resin pigments? Hi Tom, I tried to help by going to http://www.jamestowndistributors.com , from where i mail ordered my last batch of pigments last summer. but i realized that they are just a boat supply advertising 1 oz. tubes. i would imagine that any supplier who is repackaging pigment into 1 and 2 oz. containers probably has quart cans onsite. fiberglasssupply and (is it) fiberglass hawaii come to mind. maybe they can custom re-package to sizes that fit your needs better. what kind of shelf life can you expect from this stuff anyway? p.s. when i ordered from jamestown, they advertised 1 oz. tubes, but sent me 2 oz. jars for 5 of the six colors i had ordered, so they may stock in bulk as well. the stuff i got was great.>>> Where are you guys buying resin pigments? Ramon: I remember you posting a note about some liquid pigments from some source, almost like food coloring liquid. How did that work out, stable colors? able to get opaque colors? To clarify my question, I’ve been using the pigments that are common in most boat shops, Everlast? 1oz. tubes in basic colors. I believe some of the larger surfboard supply places offer larger quantity, maybe more variety and at a cost that is more economical if you were doing lots of tint or opaque lams. The stuff I’m using is about $4.95 per tube. Seems I’ve read that auto paint pigments of some sort are also compatible with polyester resins. Thanks. yeah, Tom…i remember, the food color consistency stuff is still in my garage unused…that was last summer. i was about to do my first full color lamination…and you and i were discussing it in a thread. i think it was gene who came along and posted something like “and avoid that food color pigmenting stuff”. he didn’t say exactly why, but that was good enough for me. i got the stuff from jamestown - the job came out better than i had hoped. tell you what…you do a whole lot more work than i do (especially lately, i’m down to nothing), e-mail me your address, i’ll happily send you the stuff and you can test it. it’s yours if you want it. i’m sure it wont do opaque, but there is one that does ‘pearlescent’ effect?? are you still contemplating the DR? may be too late for this year.>>> Ramon:>>> I remember you posting a note about some liquid pigments from some source, > almost like food coloring liquid. I bought some of my pigments a little over two years ago and haven’t had a problem with them going bad. I usually stir them before I use them but haven’t had any problems…>>> Hi Tom, I tried to help by going to http://www.jamestowndistributors.com , > from where i mail ordered my last batch of pigments last summer. but i > realized that they are just a boat supply advertising 1 oz. tubes. i would > imagine that any supplier who is repackaging pigment into 1 and 2 oz. > containers probably has quart cans onsite. fiberglasssupply and (is it) > fiberglass hawaii come to mind. maybe they can custom re-package to sizes > that fit your needs better. what kind of shelf life can you expect from > this stuff anyway? p.s. when i ordered from jamestown, they advertised 1 > oz. tubes, but sent me 2 oz. jars for 5 of the six colors i had ordered, > so they may stock in bulk as well. the stuff i got was great.
