Can I use water based acrylic as pigment?
Does it mix with poly resin?

Hi Mjshdj-
Here is pigment http://www.foamez.com/glassing-surfboards-surfboard-pigments-tints-c-3_34.html . This stuff is made to mix with Poly or Epoxy Resin. When using Epoxy, we recomend mixing it into the Hardener side first.
Have a great day.
Brad
Thanks Brad,
But can you tell me what the pigment is?
Is it acrylic?
Latex?
Tempera?
Can I just use titanium white?
Thanks Brad!
But can you tell me what pigment actually is?
Acrylic?
Latex?
Tempera?
Can I just use Titanium White Acrylic(Water-Based)?
Sorry Double Post!
Surfboard resin is generally a polyester or amine (epoxy) based material and liquid products intended for other base chemistries will not work.
Exceptions of course apply: a powder pigment can probably be used with any base chemistry that it is not incompatible with; there are some waterborne epoxies that MIGHT be okay with water-soluble pigments.
Long ago I was informed that Fiberglass Hawaii pigments were made in a glycol base and were thus compatible with both poly and epoxy resin systems. I don’t know who is the actual original manufacturer of the pigments they sell but I suspect they only repackage it.
Acrylic will not disperse in resin. Polyester resin is an oil based product…therefore any water based pigment will not combine. You will have some luck with raw pigmnets from paint stores…you have no doubt seen them squirting into the paint cans. But caution is needed as you will not know exactly how the pigments may effect the strength and hardening time.
“Honolulu” is correct.

I have successfully used artist pigments with epoxy resin in the lam. do tests before lamination to make sure you get the right amount!
hi Mjshdj ,
just to clarify .....
what are you going to be doing with it ?
I ask , because I have used orange [and also , yellows , and blues ] acrylic artist paint , mixed with polyester resin ....
.... in a fin panel .
But , I got a TINT [translucent] ,
not a PIGMENT [opaque] effect.
WHICH effect are you after ,
and
are you thinking of doing a WHOLE SURFBOARD , or maybe in more of a small area , or a 'resin swirl' type application ?
...cheers for any more info !

Thanks Guys For all the info!!
I’m using Poly UV resin.
When I was Routing a center fin, the
stringer splintered and cut into the foam
on one side of the box. Looks like crap, so
I wanted to use some pigment, when I set the boxes.
I have a tube of Titanium Oxide White Acrylic sitting
around and I was wondering if it is compatible with the resin.
I know I have to catylize the resin, but don’t want to screw the
box up any more by mixing the white in the resin.
The pigment we sell is dispersed
in an unsaturated polyester grinding resin.
Hope that helps.
Brad
Brad- are the tints you sell in the same base?. That might explain why my little tub of smoke tint turned slightly “gloppy”, must have got some catalyst or something in there? I’ve used it since, to no apparent ill effect, but I always was puzzled why it turned into an inky jelly.

I do not know the answer to this question......
The Low Tech Lab uses resin Tints and Pigments from Fiberglass Hawaii and FoamEZ. The product can be used with Polyester resin or Epoxy Resin......
why take a risk with an unknown product.....Really? 6 bucks plus shipping goes a long way.....and if you take a road trip to HB or Ventura.....both suppliers are freeway close.....

so , are you are just needing it for pigmenting around the border of the fin box , if I read that right ?
do you have a closeup picture showing the area in question , please ?
I tend to agree with 'stingray' , if you are wanting an OPAQUE result [yes?] , spend the money on the white pigment that he suggested.
You never know , later on you may use it in resin swirl or white fin panels , in borders around fcs / futures/ probox / lokbox fin systems ...it will certainly last you a long time , and go a long way .
And , as you get to befriend local swaylockians [hopefully] , you may be able to swap / share other colours with each other , and get adventurous with your pigment / tint / resin work [ for example , there is certainly enough good stuff on the 'show us your resin tints and patterns' thread here at sways to truly inspire [ and challenge ] us to 'take it to the 'next' level' , eh ? ....maybe check out 'darth vader's work there , for example ...yewwww !
cheers !
