Hello! I am finished shaping my alaia (will proabably reshape it) and i wanted to know what would be something to waterproof it with. It is made out of pine, so i dont know what would work well for it since its kind of porous.
I've heard of boiled linseed oil doing the job. It is also very flammable. I saw a thing on tv about linseed oil soaked rags self combusting without an open flame. dispose of them properly and keep everything out of the sun or they can catch fire.
I have also heard of multiple coats of olive oil or canola oil being used, but I don't know how well it works. You should probably check the archives for some ideas.
good luck
Yeah I dont think I’m going to display it, but I have this stuff called Watco Teak oil finish. Do you know if that works? Oh and with the urethane coat, will that just go around it or will it soak into the board?
Thank you. I picked up a thing of teak oil at home depot a little bit ago, and am going to test it out on some spare pine; I'll see how that works out. As for the Boiled linseed oil, I read about it alot and people say that it doesnt fully waterproof it, but it does the job for paulownia since that woods already water resistant. If anyone else has any ideas please post them. thanks again
A while ago I picked this up from Tom W's web site...
1/3 raw linseed
1/3 gum turpentine
1/3 apple cider vinegar.
Hope that helps.
unless you are making it as a display board—since this is a work in progress. just put a coat of urathane on it to use till you reshape it. and once you get yout shape down and dialed in, you can either refinish it or built Mark II…
