pinlines

I want to do pinlines on a board im making, its a fish with resin swirls on the bottom with a cutlap. The only way i have done them is before the gloss coat using resin pinlines. I’m not doing a gloss coat on this board though, so i was wondering if doing pinlines with paint after the hotcoat then sealing the board with something would work.

thanks in advance.

Yes.  Just be sure whatever paint you use isn't sensitive to whatever sealer you use.

what do you reccomend as a sealer/paint combo?

I’ve done water based paint, acrylic sealer or poly gloss.  Make sure the paint is dry, really, really dry before sealing.  Posca pens and poly gloss.

Like Lee said.  You can use pretty much any acyrlic paint under a Polyester gloss resin like Reichold.  Or you can use an acrylic sealer like Behr tile sealer from Home Depot over any flat acrylic paint.  I've used flat house paint from HD or Lowes, tempera from Walmart and Michaels, and artist's acrylics straight out of the tube.  They'll all work.  But as Lee stated be sure you let them dry;  a day or two minimal.  Some guys lightly scuff the pinline with a 3M pad before they clearcoat.

Why not do the pin lines with resin still? It gives it that classic look and feel and it’s more durable than sealing it with acrylic. We have a video that will be going up at the end of the week where we do resin pinlines on a sanded finish Brewer.

Hey Drifter-

You can go ahead and put the pin line on with paint and brush hotcoat resin over the pinline about 2" total wide.  Then come back and hit it with some 220g on a block.  This is a very tenuous process as you have to be sure to get the resin on smooth and flat.  Then be extremely careful to sand the resin flat without sanding through to your pin line.  Kind of dicey but it works.  The easy way is to spray some clear coat after you pinline.  The problem with this method is it wears off over time.

Good luck-

The montana white does great pinlines without the nead for sealing, its resin based to once it cures its pretty tough to get off.

Just do a resin pin. No need to go over it with anything.use gloss resin if possible.

Hi Cleanlines-

Resin pins look awesome but can be fickle to lay down.  The bummer is if you don’t cover the resin pin with resin it will eventually wear off too.

Just a little more feedback.  All good ideas.

Acrylic paint, use Nova-color paint. It has a lot of binders in it. They help the paint to adhere to the surface. Lasts a long time and you can Acrylic over it. Spray it on.

Paint pens, use water-based inks like Posca or Sharpie. Acrylic over to seal.

Resin pinlines. Takes some resin skills. Use some cobalt to kick it off quick. Use good tape. Scuff, Acrylic, Hot-coat, or Gloss over.

Do pin lines make the board go faster ? Do they make it easier to catch waves ? I used to like pin lines, now I wonder why. What good were they ,gona look at the board or surf it. I guess if your selling the board pin lines make it look nice.

Like binding on a guitar or moulding on cabinets or bullnose on a counter…it’s that professional touch.  But mostly it covers up wiggly cut laps!

I like a nice clean cutlap on Volan especially.  No pin.  If you do it right on a tint and cut deeper into the foam, the tinted resin will puddle in the cut at the lap and give you a "natural" pinline.  Comprende??  Lowel
