Pinstriping paint

Question for you pinstriping gurus

All my boards are poly and I’ve had good success with resin and acrylic laquer spray can pinlines, but I bought this pinstriping kit to do my truck and it worked so well that I tried it on a scrap board with a sanded hot coat. the paint that comes with it is enamel and when I covered the test area with more resin it would not adhere to the pinline. What other types of paint can I use with the Finesse tape that I can brush on and is compatible with poly resin. I searched the archives and didn’t find much, I like the fact that I can lay down the pinline tape brush on the color and pull it off without covering the whole board with tape and paper

Thanks Everyone

Tom

Try light sanding the pinstripe with some 400 grit or a scotchbrite pad before glossing. You have to do that or the resin won’t bond well to the paint.

Water based acrylics like Novacolor, Liquitex and Golden should also work.

That tape has been my “little secret” since I started. I can’t live without it…

I use “oneshot” enamel with a mack brush to apply the paint. Peter Pinliner from moonlight uses the same paint, says there’s no problem with doing a poly gloss over the top of it. Just make sure it’s completely dry before glossing.

Best price I found on the one shot is at dick blick art supplies online.

This paint is enamel and I let it dty for 24 hours, lightly sanded as usual and put a little SILMAR gloss on it and it would not stick to the pinline. Are all enamels the same ?

Thanks Tom

Click the link Bud sent.

They are a company from New York called Finesse Pinlines

The sample kit that I posted is $78.00 and free shipping

The tape works awsome but is very thin, that’s why I’m trying to find a paint that is very opaque

Tom

no idea if they’re all the same. To tell the truth, I’ve never actually poly glossed over it. I just do a rattlecan clear coat sealer or an acrylic sealer over the top. I’ve definitely never had any problems with that. As for the poly gloss, I only know what I’ve heard… but if peter from moonlight isn’t an authoritative source, I don’t know what it.

Tom, For “very opaque” paint, use Liquitex paste out of the tube.

After everything is taped, just hold the tube upside down against the tape, squeeze lightly, and move along the taped off area.

I walk backwards down the board so I can see the slight squeeze-out of the paint as I go. Pull the tape as soon as you’re done.

Rich Harbour used to have a video on his website of the process. If it’s still there, you can watch a skilled craftsman at work.

Found it online but it comes in 3 different thicknesses, they have what is called SOFT, HEAVY and SUPER HEAVY tubes which one works best for pinlines

Tom

how bout useing the waterbased sharpie?

after squeezing the the stuff from the tube drag a plastic card across it to push off excess

Tom, I use the heavy. The soft is a little runny for me. And the heavy allows immediate pull of the tape.

I know Kokua uses paint pens for pinlines. With that method, you have to be sure the tape is tight down on the board so you don’t get any flow under the tape.

Howzit Doug, I find using my thumb nail to press the tape down works really well, but a popcycle stick works too, just don’t tear the tape.Aloha,Kokua
