Planer/vac trigger set up

Does anyone have a really cool way to set up a vac attatchment to a planer so when you trigger the pplaner on and off the both turn on and off. Also, what is the vacum to purchase for this? Let’s see who the veterans are here…?

I bought a 12 gal. wet/dry vac at a garage sale for $10.oo ,cut the bottom half off and shoe goo it to a 30 gal plastic coated paper barrel(fitting was perfect)I got for free.As far as everything going on or off with a trigger,I,m sure it can be done,I just have mine on a switch ,it works well enough for me.

Herb, you have to be kidding me. You are the man of the hour. Great, so you can shape to your hearts content and still not fill up the barrel? Where did you get the barrel? #0 gallons is a lot of foam isn’t it? By the way, does your vac hose bind or give you any problems when going to the other side of the board to shape? Thanks for the help.

Also, > what is the vacum to purchase for this?>>> Let’s see who the veterans are here…? That wiring could be done rather easily, one of two different ways. Using the planer switch to operate both motors would require removal of one wire in the vacuum, and an additional wire from the switch in the planer, going to the vacuum. Only problem there, would be amperage rating of the switch might not be enough to run both motors. The second, and probably easiest way would be to “hard-wire” the planer re: eliminate the switch. Build a properly grounded extension cord that both planer and vacuum would plug into, and wire a push button on/off switch in the cord that would be foot operated to operate the plug. No changes would have to be made to the vacuum so it could still be used independently of the planer if desired. If the planer presently has a “lockable” on off switch, there would be no need for 'hard wiring" the planer. You can probably find all the materials needed at your local hardware store, except maybe the foot operated switch, that might require a trip to an electrical supplies store. Aloha, Old Longboarder

The last lab I worked in we had a craftsman shop vac that you could plug the tool into, then plug the vac to the wall. The vac would come on about two second after the tool is switched on

ALOHA,herb.

Thanks in advance -Brandon Moyles

I forget the model number but it was a smaller one, couple of gallons, right off the shelf at Sears. I think the power accessory option is becoming a more comon feature on some of the shop vacs, as people become more aware of the dust that is coming off of their tools.

There are more and more coming with the switch as Rob said. I found out that Porte Cable has a super nice 10 gallon but it goes for $219.00 or so. I thing there are some really cheap ones out there now. Look around at Home Depot–they can order anything and they get it for a graet deal.
