Hi,im in northern N.S.W AUS and was wondering where people were getting their pvc or perspex sheet from for making templates?? I cant seem to find anywhere that supplies it in a decent enough size, most places only have it in like A4 paper size. Cheers !
Hey fins out…I know nothing of shopping in your area but if you dont have a plastic supplier in your town I would go talk the boys in your nearest sign shop - they will use blown PVC sheet for sign boards - that’s much better than acrylic as it wont shatter when you drop it, and its generally cheaper - the stuff I’ve used is branded as ‘foamex’ but that may be a UK thing. It’s avaialbe in 8’x4" sheets but they may have offcuts that are big enough, may be able to supply full sheets or will give you contact details of where they buy from…I’ve just done a quick google search on tweed heads sign makers (as you are in northern NSW) and it returned plenty of results - sure you will find one near you.

Home Depot here has sheets. So a building supply may work for you as well.
i use a heavy gauge clear mylar............works great !
i score the edge of the template with a marker so i have a hi-visability outline.
you can roll it up like paper roll, and pack it away..............stick it out in the sun, and,"bang" it's flat as a pancake !
tough as nails and will last .

Yeah Herb, im a carpet vinyl layer, mainly specialiseing in commercial grade vinyls, i was wondering about materials like Mylar as a template, easy to come by and as you say, rolls up and a little warmth makes in nice and flat again, also would lay nicely on the blank.
*specialising. Sorry, obviously don’t specialise in the spelling dept lol
don't fret about it...................it's not a spelling website.
here's what i do:
i take a heavy butcher block paper(125lbs burst wt.) and get my template on that.
spray glue the paper template to the mylar, let dry(!!!!!!!!!caution!!!!!!!!! just a little amount of spray glue is needed ,basically around the edges).
after the paper is set, start cutting up broadway !
oh ya,first , i score it deep w/ a razor blade, then cut it out with a pair of quality sissors.
finally,i sand any the edges flush, and marker the beast.
nice thing about mylar is you can see thru it...............many-o-time did i need this with my older masonite templates when matching up lines on the blank.

Brilliant Herb. What mil would be minimum? 5? ish
greg,
ya about 5 on the minimum ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i've had mine so long i forget the figures. you might want to get some scrap samples and try them out...............go with what works best for you.
i have converted loads of my old masonite templates onto mylar and store them in papertowel cores/tubes.mark the cores with the type of template( on the template as well)on the out side for quick ref.
you can also make those cheater tools used in marking the widths on your blanks out of mylar.
i also use mylar for dings and one sided molding of fins(superchargers),and have been doing this for about 20+ years now...
