sifted through archives and other posts and just want to confirm my procedure for resin tinting the bottom of my 'lis fish' creation!
- tape up cut lap on deck
- flip board and glass bottom with resin tinted lam (maybe red, maybe yellow or maybe a combo to get a swirl!)
- once gelled, flip board and cut away excess cloth along tape edge
- tape up cut edge along the coloured side of the original cut lap, and glass with clear lam up to tape edge (creating a 'join' where the coloured lap edge and deck glass meet
- glass a second layer on deck in clear lam, wrapping around rails
- hot coat
- add pinlines
Questions I have are;
1.If the second layer of cloth on the deck is done as a free lap, will this show up on the coloured bottom side or can it be sanded flat before hotcoating to hide it in similar fashion to if it was all done clear?...OR should this second deck layer be also done as a cut lap?
2. Should both deck layers (clear) wrap the rails as per normal clear laminating for strength?
Pretty keen to get this 'fairly' right, any tips would be handy!
Hope it makes sense!
I have a post from KENSURF from one of the archives 'show us your resin tints and patterns' which is what I think I wil follow;
this is my proceedure... ( I do clear decks and colored bottoms thats why I call yours reversed)
tape off deck or bottom flip board do color work and wrap rails to tape line,, let gell good flip and trim tape off color line Lam one layer of glass let gell good and trim sand the lap line smooth and lam one more layer over the clear side wraping around the rails proceed to ot coat pinline if the cut line looks like shit ( mine usualy do but dont tell Vader)
if you cut the cloth and not wrap the rail you ll end with a weaker glass work
plus, if you for some reason finish with a not so good sanding process, you ll have kind of a separated sections; one with cloth on the deck and then other with cloth on the rails
If doing deck clear, both layers of cloth should wrap, bottom layer about to rail apex, second layer around rail to flats on bottom. No need for cut lap, use styrene if necessary.
You might find it harder to do a clean tint and then cut through double laps with a double layer deck lam. Try laminating a single colored deck layer first. Spend some extra time to get the laps smooth and even. Cut lap and knock down any rough edges with a file or surform - don’t go too deep on the clean up or you’ll mess up the tint. Then laminate single layer bottom and freelap to the deck. Clean that up after it hardens and then do a single clear deck with freelap to the bottom.
