gday ant: i went for double foiled plywood keels on my 5’&7". they’re not true 50/50 foiled, more 60/40 with the 60 obviously on the outside. the specs are as follows: 9 & 3/4" base, 5" deep (these measurements include the 1/4" clear halo around the entire fin). you can see in the photo that they’re true D-keels, very upright trailing edge, no rake at all.
i hope this info helps ant.
i’m no expert about the whole single versus double-foiled debate but, from my experience at riding both, i find the double keels tend to hold longer through turns while the singles release quicker & are more ‘snappy’ like a thruster. when you’re up and driving & really on rail, you’re basically surfing off one keel & of the swallowtail’s pins - for me the feeling is a little like riding a singlefin pintail - so in my opinion it makes sense to have a double foil. but, like i said, i’m more enthusiast than expert.
for my board’s specs the original thread can be seen at:
after raiding a whole bunch of ideas in the forums, i shaped the bum crack last using a round tapered file, then paper wrapped round a pencil, & cleaned-up with screen.
My keels usually end up around 3/8" at the base. I use them double or single foiled. Single foiled are supposed to be a little less tracky I hear. I havn’t found that to be true, though. Mike
