Auto paint supply stores have hi qual rubbing compounds. Miramar has Tri city paints. Check yellow pages index, auto paint, auto body supply.
I use either/or …
) A tooth polish/paste. A tip from Cleanlines.
) A waterless,industral handcleaner.Green in color with a fine grit in it.
Both are excellent polishes for surfboard finishes.
Another is a final surface polish AKA Lemon Pledge Furniture polish. A tip from Jerry Mowe from SouthShore Surfboards. … …Herb
Chris:
Good tips you’ve gotten from Herb on alternatives, gotta try the tooth polishes.
I just bought a refill of my only local option from an auto paint supply store. “3M-5954 Super Duty Rubbing Compound”. The label indicates that it is used after 500/800 grit and equals a 1000 grit compound. Have used it on poly and epoxy to get decent polished gloss.

Toothpaste is good. Used to be recommended for polishing the haze from convertible rear windows when they were made from flexible plastic… Why not lay in a supply of abrasives? That way your supply is assured, you can make up the compounds as needed, and you save money. Here is one source:

You will need to mix the powders with a liquid. What to use depends on how much working time you need. Water will work, dries slowly. The 3M/DuPont/Simoniz automotive products (which iirc are mostly based on red rouge and white tripoli) typically use a carrier like kerosene. If you can work really quickly, I see no reason why DNA wouldn’t work. Paul “Silly” Cannon makes jewelry, I’ll bet he could give you some real insight about this issue…

You can also go to any good boat store and buy 3M’s Marine Finesse-It II. Really good stuff. I use it alot on repairs on glossed and polished boards and it works great. Always thought that it does look like tooth polish though.
