Polishing Video

I thought I would post this little polishing video. You Tube busted me for copyright infringement on my chosen music so they inserted their own. Unfortunately it quits before you get to the end but you get the drift. This covers only the polishing part not the sanding part leading up to the polishing.

Great video and that board looks great. Just a couple of questions. I use Farcela G3 compound and the G mops that go with it and cannot get anywhere near that kind of shine, do you ever use these, and if so how do they compare to the wool bonnets? All the car bodyshop guys i know tell me G3 is the way to go and it should be used with the right mops, what would you recomend?

Thanks again for the post

Thanks for sharing that. I’m presently trying to get a board to shine. It’s epoxy. I’m guessing your is poly.

What’s tri cut? A finer grit of compound?

Like the earier question, does it make a difference if you bonnet is wool or synthetic? Also how high rpms are you doing??

Again thanks for sharing. Your finsih work is aways top notch. Actually all your work is. I’d love to see more videos.

Hey bside and libel,

We have used other Auto compounds but found through trial and error (a lot of errors!) that regular 3M rubbing compound and Tri-Cut works the best for us. The Tri-cut has the consistancy of watered down tooth paste and yes we have even tried that. It makes the board smell really nice but not quite the shine. We have tried synthetic materials but the wool seems to be the best. It might have something to do with the fact that it slowly “sheds” cleaning itself along the way. We get about 10 boards out of a bonnet before we have to change to a new one. We use one side for the compound and one side for the tri-cut. We spur the bonnet when it looks like it is clogging up.

As far as speed goes we work both the compound and the tri-cut over 1/4 of the board on slow speed using figure eights and then slowly increase in rpm until you are running at top rpm probably around 6,000. You want the board to heat up but just enough but not enough to waffle it. You can tell when your polish dries up and no cloudyness is left to move on. If the board needs a little bit more lay down a little more fluid and do full length sweeps parallel to the stringer.

Let me state that if you don’t do the pre-sanding correctly you will never get a good shine. Each step adds upon itself and if you skip any step or do it half ass you don’t come out with a great result in the end.

llilibel03,

Not from my personal experience, but I hear with epoxy board, if you spray clear coat on it, then wet sand with really high grit sandpaper, 2k grit or higher? You can then polish it, without adding a layer of resin. Might be worth checking in to.

As far as poly boards, i use the method in the video, but I add a 3rd step and use meguires swirl remover, its like the consistincy of lotion, and do this as the final step.

From the current epoxy thread - from Greg L.

Polishing an epoxy gloss coat comes down to sanding finer before
polishing. Sand to 1500, then polish and your looking at a mirror.
I’ve also suggested here many times that for glossing 2040 is a better
material. It will polish better and flows better during the gloss.
