Polyester resin as an airplane luggage

Have you had trouble with small amounts of resin on board? I’ve had my ding kit, some solarex epoxy with me and no-one has been interested, but this time I was planning to take some polyester and catalyst with me.

I don’t remember where but I recall lately someone saying they got a load of grief for even having a tube of solarez (ding repair kind) in their luggage. I would imagine that resin and catalyst (!) would not go over well on U.S. airlines. No idea about overseas… would suggest you call the airline and ask before trying it!!!

Biarritz,

Part of the issue may be with how you transport the resin (what it is in) if you only are taking an ounce or 2 and a little tube of catalyst it shouldn’t be a problem. I travel with my homemade ding repair kit no problem. I put my catalyst in essential oil bottles with the little drop dispenser opening. I haven’t tried the ones with the pippettes but they may work fine. I use the bottles similar to the one on the right. You can find them at health food stores.I just wrap them in a paper towel for padding, and then use the towel for cleanup if I need it. These little bottles hold acetone very well. Keep it all in a ziplock, your toiletry kit, in your checked baggage and they don’t say squat. ( To me at least.) It is when you have those TSA-ZI’S go thru you carry on that you may run into some friction…

Hope it helps….

Hi,

I was going to say put it all in your wash bag, but ZoSurf beat me to the punch, I like your idea about the bottles and will be using that next time I fly.

I’ve had some stuff confiscated before, most annoingly a whistle on my key ring - “because I could use it to organise something” what I don’t know, maybe a game of cabin volley ball? the security guard was less than impressed when i pointed out that under each seat is a life jaket that had a whistle anyway, if I wanted to do something like that but, I didn’t want to push my luck.

Also my Zippo lighter which was “a fuel container” ok so I’ll take out the cotton wool how about that? NO coz then it was “a container that once had feul in it” couldn’t even reclaim it on the way back through, I think the gaurd just wanted a new whistle and lighter to be honest.

I can understand that in light of world events security needs to be tight but that really pissed me off, if I had thought anything of it I would have left it at home,

My advise is if they find it chances are they won’t be happy, but take it anyway, try to be a bit sly about how you pack it, don’t pack it with the rest of your surf stuf or board, but be prepared to give it up if asked, chances are they won’t ask any questionsor even check any way.

Or if you have friends at your destination check if they have any you can use or post some and check its arived before you leave if your really worried.

Good luck

My friend is flying from England to Brazil next week with the epoxy board I have just finished making for him. He asked me to make him up a ding repair kit to take with. He is planning to put it with his lugguage. I was going to pack him some resin, hardener and denatured alcohol in small plastic bottles. Is it ok if it goes in the luggage hold? I have had visions of the bottles exploding when the pressure drops at high altitude, the resin and hardener reacting, giving off heat, igniting the alcohol which in turn will set fire to the luggage and plane. This might happen, this might not. What is the better wisdom? Carry smaller amounts in hand luggage as suggested or seal the bottles well, put the kit in hold and hope for the best?

The FAA isn’t going to list it specifically, because there are 20 trillion flammable chemicals, but it’s covered under “Flammable Liquids” – not allowed in carry-on or pack in luggage.

If you pack it well, you can try the “Don’t tell, hope they don’t ask” approach…

Last time I flew they checked the list that states whether the material is flammable or not for checked luggage.

In my case I admitted to having a box of solid fuel (Esbit) and they took it away (maybe 80 grams - a couple of onces), which I half-expected.  It was painful cooking on Sterno, which was the only alternative I could find at the Walmart on Kauai.  But it gave me time to watch the surf while brewing a cuppa.

Short answer.  If you pack it and declare it they will probably take it away from you (ever seen poly burn?).  You could try “forgetting” you had packed it, but if they detect it, they may consign you to that netherworld of suspended human rights.

Howzit love, Some times they open your bags even though they aren't carry on. If they do that and find the chemicals and something bad will most probably happen to you. Don't they have ding kits in Brazil since they build a lot of boards there and taking the chance is not worth the chance. Before 9-11 you could put just abut anything in yous baggage with no problems and in 96 we took enough materials to Costa Rica to put a broken board back together and they never checked our bags. But when I was going to Oahu for radiation treatments they opened 1 of my bags and pt a notice in it that they had done it without my permission, be very careful. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks guys

The heading should have been epoxy not polyester -but its resin nevertheless.

The kit now contains resin, hardener & alcohol in quality 100mml plastic jars.(apparently leak proof)

He is flying from Heathrow on a Brazilian airline and seems happy to take his chances.

Don’t think he will be near a surf shop to pick up a repair kit as he going straight to the Amazon Basin to surf the Pororoca.(predicted 8 to 10 foot on the smaller tides)

I shall pass on the information and he can make an informed choice.

His biggest concern I think is not airport security but piranha, crococile and the dreaded candiru, the small fish that is able to detect your urine stream in the water and will attempt to swim up your urethra. If successful it can only be removed by surgical means which presents the possibilty of the worst form of amputation known to man. I think I would prefer to be jailed for illegal possesion of resin.

contact the right reverend  surf shaman

to put a santaria spell of protection

on the board to protect it from dings

stop at the catholic church and have father antonio

bless the board to protect it also.

repair kits will be totally redundant.

…ambrose…

epoxy boards never ding.

unless they are possessed

by evil spirits.

Well, he’d have to stop off in Cuba or maybe PR for that.

Why not wait til he gets to Brazil and see a practitioner of candomblé, instead?

yea that guy.

or the bishop of canterbury?
