Just had an idea! A poor man’s idea! Was thinking of buying some (waterbased) artist acrylic paint, letting it dry completly and trying to somehow make it in a powdery pigment for epoxy/poly, why you ask? Well first, mostly im doing this because im bored , secondly, i can get them for pennys (6 oz for about 50 cents), third and most interesting… a SH*T LOAD OF COLORS!!! well ill be doing some test panels testing if it dries, if it sticks, if ill instantly catch on fire etc etc… maybe ill try some oilbased ones but im pretty sure that wont work out that good. I did one time mix some acrylic straight from the bottle to poly resin and it did dry, after a week
but it was hard rock solid anyway. Well anyways guys ill keep you informed, if any of you have tried this, please do tell
The epoxy pigment from the shop where I go is a paste too. It is extremely messy, acrylic would be much more handy.
But indeed, I would probably be able to find pigment powder in a paint shop. I’ll try to find some.
Huh. Acrylick is used the hundreds of thousands of surfboard air brushers and pinstripers.

I don’t think it will work, you might as well just mix it in wet as drying the ‘paint’ won’t leave you with just pigment, it will be dry paint with all it’s extra chemicals that are likely to be the cause of any trouble you are likely to have.
Good luck anyway
Mick.
hi there 'Chumbo' !
[first , just to to avoid confusion , are you talking about a translucent [tint] result , or an opaque [pigment] result ? ]
yes , I've used acrylic artist tube paint [straight out of the tube] , mixed with resin , to make some nice coloured TINTS [translucent / transparent ] ....in fin panels ... it worked fine , for me !
As you say , a wide variety of colours are available , when you mix them ...fun !
So...are you going to be making fin panels ? [ I ask , because you mentioned a 'test panel']
Or , are you planning on tinting or pigmenting a board with it ?
Also ...can you please post up some photos , of what you come up with ? .....I'd be keen to see how you go with it , mate !
cheers !

Tempra…comes in powdered bags as it is. Why go through the hassle of getting it wet and drying it out?
-
Tempra is a reasonably low pigment paint due to its application. So it will take more to acheive the desired results.
-
Pigments are not expensive as it is why reinvent the wheel to save like 5 bucks overall? if even that
hi resindrums !
re: "tempera " ? ....do you mean this stuff ?
(I might give that a try , one day ? or not )
How did you find it 'spread out ', was it okay ? ( did you do boards with it ?)
cheers !
ben
hi again chumbo !
this is the stuff that I have used in fin panels ...
it seems that it may be available in america and europe , too ...
this is one of the two twin fins I made , using the acrylic paint 'home made' orange tint ...
...okay mate , I hope that this helps ?
cheers !

@ chippy,
Did you try this with epoxy or poly? If poly, do you know if it works with epoxy?
Guys
Stop fooling around, buy PIGMENT, it is a powder.
Go see a paint store, they have plenty in different UV stabilities.

I have mixed some high quality Tempera powders with polyurethane clear coat with good results. I'm not sure how well the Tempra will hold up over the years. UV light can fade some pigments very fast. Ever notice that red cars tend to look faded and discolored quicker then other colors?
Of course those tricky little Chemist working in back rooms of Paint factories have come up some amazing things that do amazing things like UV protection and better color retention while making products that are less toxic.
hans , poly . dunno about epoxy , someone please chime in
wouter
i LOVE fooling around !
pigment is actually a PASTE , here in west oz , but yes if you like your powder [you from amsterdam? ha ] you CAN buy powdered pigment [WHY you would , though , i am not sure ?!]
cheers

Guys in know i can buy the pigments i know they are pretty inexpensive, but heck isnt this swaylocks? dont you guys thrive in making simple stuff complicated?? ,chippy nice fins! they did come up nice! im trying to make the paint powder for small stuff i woudnt dare making an entire board with dryed out acrylic, cool thing about acrylic though its mainly plastics what dryes of is the water in the end i think it would just be as inert as any other pigment, ill probably be tinting small areas and fins, truth is i really dont trust anything you mix with the resins my thoughts it would make them weak by interupting the chains, epoxy’s strenght comes from its strong crosslinking and anything you put in it would just interrupt it (well thats my thought i could be completely of, im just a 3rd year Chem. Engineering student). Well anyway… got some acrylic paint out in the sun shouldnt be long its pretty hot here!
....thanks for coming back , chumbo !
" Guys i know i can buy the pigments i know they are pretty inexpensive, but heck isnt this swaylocks? dont you guys thrive in making simple stuff complicated?? :D "
a LOT here SEEM to , don't they ?!
.... but me ? I 'thrive' on trying to keep things simple [ in life and in surfing too ...oh wait ...surfing IS life !]
and also , in trying different stuff ....
....that's swaylocks ....for me , at least ! [others may vary , perhaps ...]
like I say , when you have used the pigment , can you show us your results [photos] please , 'chumbo' ??
cheers !

i see people suggesting paint shops for powders…ive seen auto paint suggested… i have heard dyes have been used and knocked but never definitive answers to these points of interest?
auto paint to me sounds like my best bet over these ‘universal’ tints ive acquired?
again, the foam and glass suppliers here have black white yellow and green in stock im in the south of brazil and i tell you everything is hard to come by. everything but food…
This may sound crazy but my kids dyed easter eggs a couple of weeks ago using these little tablets. A tiny fragment of one of these tablets was in the bottom of my sink and I couldn’t believe how much red was coming from this tiny piece the size of the tip of a pencil. Might be worth a try.
Little 2oz jars of of tints and pigments cost 5-8 dollars each from FoamEZ.com. Add a few bucks for shipping. How Poor/Cheap are you? I know you're in the islands....did you talk to the paint guy at Home Depot?
If you are ordering from the US and shipping there are many places with better bang for your buck. No offense to EZ but if you have to go through all that trouble you want to maximize it, with some searches, you can find pigments for for 8 oz for a few dollars more. Spend your money wisely.
