I’ve never seen a Pope Bisect in person but I can tell from the photos in the mags that they are beautifully and carefully constructed. There are still some things I can’t tell from the pics. Some things I’ve always wanted to know are: when you slice a board in half, how do you seal the ends? Also what is the mechanism by which one tightens the two ends together? Shed some light for us on how you do your thing? Swaylock

Thanks for your comments! Let me briefly explain how the bisect system works. Before each board is glassed we have two clampboxes set into the shaped blank- 1 on the deck and the other clampbox on the bottom placed on the opposite side. Once the clampboxes are set the board is ready to be glassed. The finished board is then shipped to us where we complete the actual bisecting process. Once the boards are cut, each half is then sealed with a vacum molded faceplate that prevents any water from entering. In each faceplate, there is a ten inch opening into each half where a 20 inch annodized aluminum pipe fits nice and snug giving the board strength and stability. The entire bisecting process adds just under two pounds. The real benefit by having a two piece surfboard is the convenience when travelling. The Airlines do not charge you any extra baggage fees. It can be checked in as reguler luggage!! These boards have been tested in huge hawaiian surf and have performed just fine. I could go on and on about the boards but it would be best if you e-mailed us directly at our website so we could then answer specific questions. The design and construction of this product is poor and demonstrates a clear lack of know-how in carbon fiber construction. I have had terrible experience with the Pope Bisect. I spent $2,100 USD on a 9’6 Wayne Rich Carbon Hollow Stealth that is basically a piece of junk.

My Carbon Stealth Pope Bisect arrived March 2008 and on my first ride, I noticed the board does not feel right (a lot of flex). I come back to shore, and notice that both clamp boxes have stretched out of the board (this is carbon fiber right?).

I call Thane Pope, no calls returned for days, and then on a Sunday afternoon (two weeks after I have called 2-3 times and sent emails) he calls me and says he has never heard of this happening (which was a lie based on what I have read on other forums). After weeks of running after this guy, he agrees to replace the board with a new one.

Two months later I get another Carbon stealth bi-sect (scratched and missing the $85 Fin). “Sorry, I forgot to put it in a bag”… “Sorry I forgot to bring you your fin”. This is customer service? It gets better for my $2,100 surfboard.

I take the board out and on its first ride I notice it is feeling funny, I bring it to shore and the back half of the bi-sect is leaking water into it… I can’t see any holes, the plug is tight… must be a Pope safety feature to kill off customers before they can figure out they have been had…

I contact Thane and his father to see if they can look into this - no response from this dynamic duo… what a surprise!

Conclusion: This company is run very unprofessionally and clearly has no quality control. There is absolutely NO customer service. They have absolutley NO Research and Development - you are their R&D Dept and will pay dearly to take part in their after-school science experiment.

Based on my first-hand experience, Thane Pope is in the wrong job as he is totally disorganized, unprofessional in every sense of the word imaginable, and unable to run anything, much less a business.

BUYER BEWARE - save yourself the money and buy a regular board from a professionally run business that offers quality and value.

i too have had bad experiences with pope bisect and trisect products. starting with inconsistent delivery dates, false claims, faulty product, long waits for service, faulty repairs, and bounced checks.

bounced check

please learn from my mistakes…

What are the alternatives?

(( (Not counting Uli) I have a Uli, but I don’t really consider it a surfboard as such. It’s fantastic, but different. ))

As some of the emails above I have had the worst experience with any buisness I've ever delt with.  My board came and wasnt flush when I put it together.  After three months of unanswered calls and emails Carl Pope not Thane said he would send parts to fix it.  The parts never came and we sent the board back to them.  Its been weeks now and neither Thane or Carl have answered our calls or emails.  They owe us $1500 and arent paying.  We're going to have to take legal action.  All BEWARE of this company I've read tons of these experiences online.

Its been about 8 months since you posted here. What is the latest with this issue? I was thinking of buying one of these until I read this post.

Thanks

Steve

They never took care of the problem, never called back or did anything.  Many others have had similar experience and they have posted on other boards.

My Pope board is a collecting dust in my garage as its unusable.  I would highly discourage you to give anything to these clowns, unless you want an expensive piece of junk in return for your hard earned money.

Did you take them to Small Claims Court?

Do you know of any other companies that make a two piece board that actually works? There are a couple of SUP manufacturers doing this now too (Imagine and Star Boards).

Steve

I don't know of any reputable manufacturers for two piece surfboards.  I gave up and just rely on standard surf boards.  I do have a Starboard Formula Windsurfer and its been great!

I have not sued Pope in small claims.  I basically wrote the whole thing off and figure karma will take care of things for them sooner or later.

just saw this post from last week - another Pope Bisect victim:

MES boards Germany do a range of boards and even sponser riders. Deutschland uber alles!

I purchased a used one and I’m very happy with it.

Mine is the Harbour 9’-6" Banana poly.

Traveled to Panama in January 2011 and had no bagagge fees.

The board rides very good. Hard to beleive it disasembles in (2) pieces.

Bought a G&S 9' 6" Classic noserider in 1999 and had no problems with it. It rides as well as my regular G&S volan Classic noserider if not better.

The engineering of the clamps and screws/bolts is well thought out, the bolts absorb any flexing and will shear first if hit by a big wave thus protecting the board.

Pope probably made a mistake going for the hollow boards he should have stuck with West Coast board builders and american engineering.

When I bought my board back then the Bisect was well regarded.
