Post Hot Coat Issues - Cedar SUP

Hey all, on my 2nd board. For my first board, had these issues and decided to do better on my second coat, whelp…. I’ve looked at many threads on here and there seems to be different ways to handle so thought I’d post with pics.

Here is what I’ve noticed

  1. put down a thicker epoxy to all low spots (rails, idk) and sand down flush after with 80 grit

  2. put down a not to thin (not thick though?) layer and try to self level. My concern is that it will work for some spots but others, just run off side.

thoughts? I’m only allowed to post one pic so thought this one was good enough to show problem

I’ve already sanded too with 120 grit, this is the after (below and first photo too)

I’m not sure what I am looking at. Low spots, slabbing, discoloration?

Low spots.

I am thinking of the possibility of using a technique I have used and seen used on wooden boats. I prefer to use 2oz. or less Fiberglass mat. If you can’t get a piece of mat resort to using 4 or 6oz. cloth. Cut small pieces each one larger than the last. Layer the pieces smaller first until you have built up just a bit higher than the surface. Let cure and sand flat. A much better idea than trying to fill with resin. Mat definitely goes clear and is lighter. But for a couple of spots it’s not going to ad more than 2 or 3 oz.

Several way to go:

1 sacrificial layer of fiber: you lam a thin layer you sand flat, don’t care to touch it it’s here for that. Bestcto do it on green main layer.

2 cheater coat: you squegge a thin layer of resin, when tacky you brush a thicker one. If done right time main layer will flatten but not fall. A little trick is to add cabosil to cheater coat up to a tooth past texture, easy to spread and more tack.

3 last, at you stage, when epoxy fully cure, light scuffing with coarse grit sandpaper everywhere, clean then brush a polyester top coat.

Thank you. Never thought of this approach but I’m new to epoxy in general so. Appreciate the help.

Thank you. Would it make sense to use my orbital sander with a 60 grit or so and sand everything down to the first fiber glass layer first? My concern is that I could burn through but if I lay down a new layer of fiberglass, may not matter.

Don’t have cabosil, seems like there are instances where i need it in building SUPS so I’ll pick some up, thank you

Not sure I am seeing how the Cabosil will be used here. But isn’t Cabosil an opaque white powder?

If a white powder, you are right. As an update, I was emailing a professional SUP/board builder and the conclusion is that I may have overapplied denatured alcohol (DNA) after my laminating coat and probably didn’t wait for it to evaporate entirely which impacted how the epoxy bonded and where it bonded on the board. 75% of the board is fine.
