Post Surf Hygiene

Anyone go to work right after surfing (one where appearance/smell matters)?

If so, how do you rinse your wetsuit? How do you store it while at work? Do you carry a couple gallon jugs to rinse yourself off with? Carry a kit to make yourself presentable & not smell like a wetsuit?

Maybe a small cooler full of fresh water to rinse you and the wetsuit? Not much shower access where I live.

Just looking for any sort of tips along these lines.

I prefer going around smelling like low tide.

Three or four one gallon jugs filled with hot water, will still be quite warm, at the end of your surf session.     Makes a great rinse off for you, and the wetsuit.   Store the wetsuit in a cooler, and then re-rinse when you get home.  (if needed)

Add some liquid hand soap/ shower gel/ or shampoo into the first jug after you fill it with hot water, not before - too many bubbles! The other jugs are for rinsing.

I’m a teacher and I am guilty of peeing in my suit and never washing it. After a dawny on a school day I just make sure I stay on my side of the desk. Makes a refreshing change to be the smelly one in class.

thirdshade thats amazing! haha!

Wetsuit smell? Ocean smell? Imo the sea smells great if it stinks are you sure you want to be swiming in it?

Some jugs of water to rinse the wettie is a good plan but does washing the salt off really make them last longer?

I think i have something for you.

SO , Rich .....

....ummmmm.....

1.  do the kids ever ask why you wear a wetsuit all day at school  ? [or , do they not get near enough for you to be able to hear them ?]

2.  do your wetsuits mainly come apart at the seams in the crotch ?

[plus ...how many wetsuits do you 'go through /  ...er ...' piss off' [or is that 'ON?! :)  ] , in the average year or two ??]

3. but ....

'if' you were teaching  at a 'surf school' [?]

.... it's "okay" , then [?!] .... because every one else will be in rubber too, and you wouldn't appear to be [as much of]  a weirdo , then ?

  cheers [ " ewwww ...like , omg .... WHERE'S that urine smell coming from ? "]

  ben

I do three gallons of hot water in two coolers.  One for booties and feet, two to rinse me off.  I keep my suits in a covered plastic box.

" I keep my suits in a covered plastic box. "

well, I used to , but found that they got a bit mouldy over the summer , doing that .....it's nice / a change to hang em out to dry , and 'air' [once in a while ?] , I find ....

But, seriously now [just for a sec , though !]

....I'm lucky , in that I can walk home and shower in my wetty .... then hang it on the [clothes] line , while I work . Come home ....voila ! ..... A nice , dry good smelling wetty [ this is very important , when meeting  the plentiful sharks that we get here !]

  cheers Taylor !

Is that a catheter bag for 3rdshade the piddler ?

Im with tblank, whats wrong with smelling like a homeless guy, red eyeballs, encrusted eyelashes, tousled hair and salt stains on your shorts.

At school some of the country kids couldnt work out why I had wet pants and smelled salty so they thought Id pissed my pants,

 which wasnt always true.

The worst part is later in the day going for a wizz and finding sand and seaweed stuck to your junk, I think I found a small crab of the oceanic variety one day too....

you SURE it WAS the oceanic kind , brett ?

with "hygiene' like that , maybe it was ..er..."the other kind" ??

[scratch scratch "WHAT is that ITCH ?"]

YIIIIIKES maaaan !

 [ "oh ..... it's you !" ] ben haha

The kids are cool with my less than professional atire and presentation. I keep the window open on real warm days…and my suits last three winters/summers without a single wash. However, they do smell of well rotted cabbage aftert the first three months or so…funily enough it does seem to be the crotch that gives way first…now I wont even start to tell you about the smell of my booties…the wife complains about the smell even when they’re drying outside in the garden.

My 10mm freediving suit with built in hood is even worse…I average about 3 pees per 2 hour spearing and can feel the warmth seep up to my head when Im heading up from the bottom…but I do have beutifully conditioned hair, think I read about the benefits of urine treatment in a ladies magazine…or was that drinking it?

Cheers

you've taken over 'fatbaslardass's place in the lineup that is sways , nicely , thirdy !

so , IS your name to do with the [RICH ?] third shade of yellow that er 'envelopes ' your wetsuit , and [evidently] your hair and , perhaps , your booties ?   [could be worse ...if you were called TURDshade , I guess ?]

   cheers

What is it with the lack of hygene some English display? I rinse my wetsuits out and store them in a big ass bucket untill I can hang them dry. In winter I’ll put them in the spin cycle to expidite the process. I have a back up wettie for each season as well. One will dry while I use the other.

I wanna know what kind of trick you use to make your wetsuit not smell!

Mine stinks and the stink transfers to me.

My wetsuit smells the the Shamu tank at SeaWorld...I pee in it  all the time, keeps me warm...I look forward to it.

On the hygiene thing:

Keep your hair short, use an electric shaver.  Rinse you body off wit h warm or cold water...doesn't matter..  Use deodorant, use a tooth brush, use a hair brush. What's the difference between the street, or the bathroom if you have water? (cept for the pooping thing)

I fill a 5 gallon water jug from the bottom of my water heater. 1) IT GIVES ME PIPING HOT WATER, 2) it gets the sediment out of the water heater..for a longer life.

Keep your close hung up in you car.

What up with you European guys on trying to stay clean?

I live on a very rural portion of the east coast where the water reaches a balmy 40° F in the winter.  I don’t usually have much time to spend on the ritual of dressing out for cold water surf so, I keep a 5 gal bucket in my truck.  When I am finished surfing I roll up all my rubber and throw it in there.  It stays wet until I can get home and rinse it all out (I don’t pee in my suit though).  Then I drape the suit over a rod; hang the boots, hood, and gloves in the garage to drip dry.  Another nice thing about the bucket is it gives me a place to sit while I change in and out of my wet suit.

I gotta ask.....How in the heck do you NOT pee in your wetsuit?

After a couple cups of coffee and a copuple hours of surfing, nature take it's course.

One MAJOR benefit of warm water. Fly and be free.

Side note; A buddy of mine used to live right on the sand at Mission Beach and would get up, check the surf and put on his suit, and then get in the HOT shower and run out to the water. What a luxury.
