A few here have mentioned they didn't know how to post photos. If you go to any photo on the internet, you can put your curser over it, and right click, you'll get a popup menu, and one of the choices is "properties". If you click properties, another popup box appears, and one thing on that box is address (URL). If you copy that url, then when you post here, you can click the little icon of the picture (the little box with a tree), and when the menu box pops up, you can paste the URL of the photo in the appropriate blank, then just click "insert". Thats it, photo added to post. I got this html http://northshorebigwavechallenge.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/biggest_wave_winner.jpg to post the photo below.
If you have your photos on flickr or picasa or photobucket, you can use this method to post your own photos.
Another option is to click "imput format" below the box you are writing your post in. You get 2 choices: advanced editor; or simple editor. Simple editor takes you to the html format of your post. Here you can use this html to post photos <p><img src="(image url)"></p>
My questions are: Pictures "borrowed" from elsewhere on the web, like the one above, usually disappear after a day or so. Who removes them - a person, or a computer program? Why do some disappear, and some remain? As a former graphic artist, I understand copyright violation, stealing others' work, etc. But when using a photo from the internet to illustrate a point on a forum, is that "wrong"? The same as stealing? Just curious.
Huck, Thanks Heaps for posting that. I'm a complete knothead when it comes to these things, I'm lucky I can type. This is great info. One question; I have windows vista and for life of me can't figure out how to copy and paste. I can click on copy but the it disappears to someplace I cannot find it. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
ps. I always appreciate the way you will help out guys and post their shots in a larger format. You seem to have these machines wired. Oh well, at least I can use the 4" grinder in delicate situations. Big hands are a big help.
But seriously, I got a new machine with Vista installed. Hated it so much I split the hard drive (650Gb) into two sections and loaded XP Pro on one partition. Now, I have the option of running Vista or XP. Guess which one I never use?
As to URLs and embedding pics in a post… If you use Firefox, all you have to do is right click and choose “copy image location”. That puts the URL in your clipboard and it then can be pasted anywhere. All you need do is place the right tags before and after the URL. Those tags are [ I M G ] and [ / I M G ] minus the spaces.
Another way, for pics on your machine, is to make a folder on your desktop and name it SWAYS or NETPICS so you can find it easily. Park any pics you want to post in that folder. Then, right below the box where you type your post is a link for “file attachments”. Click that, open your folder, and pick the photo or image you want. I mean, this stuff can’t be any simpler.
Hah! Thank You Sammy A. "I mean this stuff can't be any simpler". Sure, for you doctor.Split your computer in two? My only capability to do that is with a saw. Thnks Again.
Are you saying the copy function doesn’t work at all, or just “paste”?
Since I never use Vista for reasons previously stated, I looked up the copy and paste question. Same as just about any Windows version. Right click > copy, then try “cntrl + V” to paste.
there are a variety of reasons that photos disappear…the big one is that the URL that is used to link to the picture becomes invalid (i.e. the file is moved, relocated, deleted, etc. in such a way that the url is no longer the location for the linked file). I’d say the majority of files that disappear on forums are for this reason. If you want your photos to stay, you need to provide a fixed reference. Your best bet is to host it yourself (i.e. photobucket, picasa, etc). If it is anywhere else, the duration the picture stays available will directly controlled by how often the server manager changes the file structure.
I’d be very surprised if anything posted up here was getting pulled or flagged for copyright violations.
But, some hosts don’t allow their content to be posted elsewhere. As the content provider, they don’t want to lose control over the context where their content is published. There are computer programs out there that troll the net and grab photos, putting links elsewhere, on potentially unapproved channels. So some websites will prevent access of their content from outside webpages.
