Has anyone out there tried Styrospray as a precoat? I’m thinking about using it like you would spackel, to seal the blank before glassing. I’m worried about he epoxy sticking to the Styrospray.

apparently it has its uses . . .
but I found out about the shell2 thing … .
I was going to try it out . . . You can send for samples and demo dvd.

So what exactly is Shell2??
We just had a sign made with it. Basically you can sculpt an artwork from EPS, then coat it with the Shell. The coating looked to be about 1/8 inch thick and was fairly uniform and yellow/white. It feels like a dense urethane foam with a semi-shiny skin. Brush marks show a little bit. It may be sandable but the shiny skin may take some of the covering with it.
I have a set-builder friend in Hollywood who says it is amazing how quick they can build giant EPS objects with chainsaws and wire brushes that end up looking smooth and solid.
I received a sample and was surprised at how tough the stuff is without any kind of reinforcement.
The sample I received is labelled “Styrospray 715 over Styroprime Sealer.” It is light density EPS (1/cu ft lb?) - I can finger dent/flex it but it springs back.
It feels like it might suffice for a lightweight bottom coat as is. I believe that as a sealer/primer for EPS with an epoxy glass job on top of that, it would be quite durable.
On the DVD they show some sculptor types who have used it instead of FRP directly over EPS foam.
shell 2 is similar using a pu/pe glassing schedule on EPS, except you put glass w/ the “hot coat” . . . Jim P told me about it . . . instead of using spackle, you use epoxy and cloth (like pu/pe lam) .
Then you put your epoxy with several layers of glass. And then the finish / hot coat on top of that . . .
FWIW, I did recently some test panels. Epoxy bonds just fine to Styrospray after a light sanding.
mix epoxy with k1 glass bubbles it works the best 5 parts k1 to 1 part epoxy you can get it through 3m
Haven’t tried this but on my last couple boards I have tried to spray a thin coat of Future floor acrylic over blank as a seal (on the advice of a frequent sways poster who’s name i can’t quite recall right now) worked really well. I recommend it. good seal and good aesthetics (clear).oh and cheap too.
