Just picked up a 6’-6" Precision Surf Designs thruster at a yard sale. Took it because it’s in pristine shape - not even a pressure dent anywhere. It is probably older as it has a gloss coat, slight vee in tail. Also glassed on fins and a “Bennett Foam” lam with a kangaroo in the logo. It was so clean and $80 took it - I figured what the hey…
Is it in fact Australian and does anyone know who, where, when, etc.
Boy, this one takes me back. Christmas time 1981 - Jan '82, spent six weeks in WA with my wife, infant son and didn’t take a board. Succumbed to the internal pressure and bought my first thruster at Yallingup. I’m sure it was a Precision Equip. The owner of the business was also an expat seppo, really nice guy. If he still runs it, he would be in his 50s, at least!!
as far as I know they still exist …I see their logo on back windows of [this years model] cars here in Perth , from time to time .
[Former world number three competitor ] Dave Macauleys label , [‘ACT’] , is big here …he makes Solomon boards here too , and sponsors Tom Innes [Shane Gould’s son ]
Have to start calling you the Minister for Information, Ben. Would you also happen to know how big it was on the day I first surfed this thruster at Yallingup? Actually, that’s an unfair question…it was a year later (than previuosly stated) that I was in WA. So now you prob know the answer, have the dimensions of my old board etc, etc.
Bennett is an Australian company, the original blank makers in this country, been there since the 50’s. They also either export or licence to S. Africa and Hawaii, so there’s no sure bet the board is Australian. Post shot of Decal, so to check, because I know the one the West aussies are talking about. But whatever it is, it sounds like you got a sweet deal…
Thanks for the replies - waiting for my daughter to help with her camera to post pics - I have a hard enough time typing let alone load pictures - lacking computer skills…
The board seems of an earlier vintage for a thruster - thicker than the norm @2 3/4", paint on the stringer - which we know not to do now.
Still, a very clean board.Even if I or my son never ride it - can easily sell for $240 + and have a stash for blanks and supplies which is where all board sale funds go.
