preferred sanding method after ding repair

Hi everyone,

I would like to start by saying, I finally finished the ding repairs on my board and wanted to take it out on the last day of a great month long surf in Santa Cruz. When I got there I remembered that I removed the fins to fix the ding around that area. I told that story to someone in the lineup yesterday and I think they were making me feel better by saying, been there done that.

Anywho! Can you guys rate my ding repair? Here’s what I’ve done:

  • used Q-cell with solarez to fill in the missing foam when I cut the glass

  • placed a small 8oz. cloth and saturated that with resin then flattened it

  • placed 2 more 8oz cloth larger than the last and saturated those with solarez

  • I let it dry for about 1.5 hours and then proceeded with sanding

  • sanded first with 80 grit with sander then hand-sanded with 80 grit

  • brushed solarez over the sanded area and waited another 1.5 hrs.

  • finished sanding with 120 and then 200.

I think it’s a little rough because you can still see (but is hard to see in photos) a little outline from the edge of where the resin was brushed. It’s difficult for me since I don’t want to sand down the glass outside of where I brushed resin or where the cloth ends.

How do you get it all flushed looking? Like the pros?

Thanks guys,

Gnar

Why three layers of 8oz? I would have used 4 or 6 oz.

Gnarly,

After the ding is filled, I sand around the ding with 100 grit untill I start to see cloth. I stop right when I start to see it though. I either do 4 or 6 oz as was mentioned above, then after lamming, I sand the edge of the cloth flush with the board then hot coat, then sand. If i hit cloth again, then I do another HC, sand. for me, grinding the lam edges flush is the most important part in getting things flush. good luck

*side note, make sure the 8oz you use isn't volan as volan has a greenish tint to it.

yeah, I gotta get me a new package of 4 and 6 oz cloth and hot coat next time. 8oz is all I had that were not all torn up.

I understand what you’re saying. I’m definetly gonna give it a shot on my 9’8" McTavish. Thanks again.
