Prescription Lens for watersports

Does anyone know if any company makes water wearable glasses. My eyes are pretty shot and taking my glasses off to go for a surf really puts a downer on the experience. I’ve thought about wearing a loop from the wings around the back of my head but the thought of losing $700 glasses really puts me off. It’s OK in a pool where you can find them but not in the surf.

thanks

you can have those oakley water sunglasses fitted with prescription inserts.

I wear disposable contacts. The oneday ones are about $100.00 for 4-6months supply. They work great and if you lose them so what??

haven’t lost a contact lens in years, but have lost three individual lenses over 20 years wearing them in surf.

When I first got 'em, I took 'em out to surf. A minor hassle. Then I started leaving 'em in, just remember not to open eyes during a duck-dive.

You get used to it; lenses (even for my crappy vision) are cheap at Costco, and nearly as cheap long term if you get daily wear. Shoot, you can get 'em on the internet, how costly can it be?

I have worn prescription goggles for the past 6 years while surfing. The first pairs I bought from “Spex” which I believe is not longer in business. The Spex had large wrap around tinted lenses that were set away from a thick, soft rubber frame. In theory the water would clear away the fogging. One Easter Sunday I got hit it the head with my own board and merely sustained 3 stitches in my eyelid as the frame absorbed most of the shock.

About 4 years (and 3 pairs) ago I switched to “Barz” optics, 100% UVA, UVB tinted goggles. These goggles are excellent as they are streamlined and can be worn for any outdoor sport. My last 2 pairs have also been polarized and that feature is well worth the money. They can be ordered from Murrays Sports (info@murrays.com, 805.684.8393) in Carpinteria, CA. Check out their web site and you can see all the features which I can not adequately describe, ie gaskets, sizes, colors, etc.

Murrays Sports is a standup group of folks. The first pair I ordered had a small scratch when I picked therm up. Without hesitation, they order a new pair and gave me the lenses that were replaced. Little did I know that beeing careless with the goggles gave me worse wear and tear.

Last year when caught inside by a large set, the goggles were ripped off my head and the leash (yes, they come with a leash) on my old goggles broke. I told them my story and as they had changed and improved they gave me a great deal on my replacement pair. The new leash is greatly improved is bullet proof.

The deluxe goggles cost about $300 and if you have vision insurance your may be reimbursed. Hope this helps.

BTW, they sell all types of water and sailing gear.

This is a perfect example of how the internet helps our lives and brings people together in positive ways. I’m stoked!

Thanks for the contact lens info guys but I have a corneal graft in one eye making it shortsighted and the other one is longsighted. Can’t wear one on the right eye and if you could imagine seeing something big through one and seeing small through the other. Pretty well stuffed and have to wear specs. I had a look at Oakleys and they are super expensive even without the prescript lens. I’ll check to see (ha ha) if speedo does something along these lines…

I suppose I could take a white cane out with me and wave it around alot when I’m riding. Hey, that might get me more waves to myself… hmmmmm more waves…hs

Anyone else got any ideas.

cheers

Is the Oakley “Water Jacket” a prescription lense?

Since Barz are goggles, you can get different prescription lenses for the right and left eyes for the Barz swim goggles via Murrays from -2.0 to -7.0 (diopter?) for $18.00 each (also need to buy the swim goggle kit for the frame $19.00). For surfing, they recommend the Barz cross-sport glasses. Prescription range for these is from -6.00 to +2.00 (apparently greater + diopter doesn’t work with these frames). Cost of a pair of lenses is $215, adding polarization and/or photochromic lenses is $60 each. It’s not clear from their catalog what the cost of the cross-sport frame alone is, but for the frame with plain lenses, it’s $100 (and $130 with polarized lenses). no, they are non-prescription sunglasses, but what oakley does with all of their “jacket” sunglasses to make them prescription is to put a prescription insert behind the regular sunglass lenses, so that you’re first looking through an untinted prescription lens and then through the tinted sunglass lens. at least this is how they did it on a friend’s pair that he wore for playing baseball. i’d imagine the same could be done for the water jackets.
