Preventing epoxy yellowing

Curious what everyone is doing?  The clear epoxy boards I have made have yellowed a bit and curious what others are doing as I move forward to prevent yellowing?  Paint blank white?  Add a little white pigment to lam coats?  Ideas.

Hey makko,

I put a little yellow tint in the lam coat. Or, some other color.  Seems to me if you paint the foam white you won’t solve the problem when the resin turns yellow. Mike

''Back in the day,'' as the saying goes, I would add a tiny amount of white pigment to the lam resin.  (poly)    I'm sure it would work with epoxy too.    The appearance you want the resin to have is the same appearance you get when you rinse a glass of milk with clear water.   A cloudy/clear appearance.    It lams out clear, hides the cell structure of the foam, and resists/reduces yellowing from sun exposure.    Mix enough resin for top and bottom first, use half for each side.    That way you get color consistancy.    It's very subtle, and looks for all the world like a clear lam.

It doesn’t matter,they all yellow.

Its difficult for me to comment on that because I am glassing wood .The board I did useing Aerialite with fast hardener shows no yellowing at all after about 2 years. But also I finished over the top of the resin with a 2 part automotive clear coat.. I have not found another resin that even comes close to that but then foam is white. and maybe the foam is yellowing. Would like to hear comments from some one glassing foam with Aerialite ?

Hey wood ogre,I’ve used several epoxies and weigh my resin/hardener and mix for about 4 minutes, usually until the streaks are gone and the resin starts to feel a bit warm.I glass over eps foam which is whiter than white and never yellows.I’ve also noticed that the boards I have finished with the 2 part automotive clearcoat have not yellowed.I also think the hardeners have a shelf life, the longer they sit the yellower they get.I have some resins that seem to yellow a few days after finishing the hotcoat. Then when you start sanding they turn white/clear again, then you put them in the sun and they slowly yellow again.

Let me clarify a bit.  I’m not talking terrible yellowing.  I’m talking a slight yellowing that is only really noticable when a board from last year is put next to a board from this year.
