Print rice paper decals

Although we were in a bind, we used the laminate stickers we had printed under the lam layer anyways. The results weren’t terrible, the plastic sticker material bubbled underneath–most likely do to the impermeable qualities. Anyways, the next board will have rice paper decals. Any advice for printer types, print quality, ink type or methods of feeding the paper? Any other tips would be appreciated. This is what I’ve heard so far: -medium-low priced printers work fine. -some ink runs, some ink doesn’t (will experiement) -attaching rice paper to a regular piece to feed paper -medium to high quality print setting First board turned out better than expected…thanks for the help! Thanks

I have a mid-price Canon printer (6 ink color type) and while it prints nice lams, I have yet to find a rice paper that will feed through w/out crumpling if fed by itself – have tried both roll and flat paper. However, I have had great results putting the rice paper on backing paper (I use construction paper) with a glue stick. I used to use tape for this purpose but that didn’t work as well. Just glue around the border of the paper and then trim that part away before you use it.

A better way is to use a non absorbant like a transparency paper. it wont absorb ink so more stays in the rice paper they have more vibrance that way you can still tack them on with a glue stick and just peel em off http://www.surfboardglassing.com

Howzit Canuk, There’s a ton on this subject in the archives. I use an Epson C-82 with Durabrite ink. I recommend this printer since the durabrite ink won;t fade like dye inks do and I have no problems when it comes to running the paper through the printer. I cut the rice paper from a roll and flatten it, then I can stack the sheets just like normal paper in the paper feeder. Yesterday I ran off 50 lams and not one paper jam or other problems. I have about 20 accounts and run off about 100 lams a month more or less. You may not be able to get the C-82,but the C-84 is an upgrade that will work just the same if not better. Aloha, Kokua

I use an Epson 785 EPX and it works like a dream. The lams feed w/o any problem and the colors are sweet. I’ve been very pleased. I got one from someone at work. You might try eBay. Should be pretty cheap these days. Also a great photo printer.

Thanks for the input. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Canuk
