In typical Madison Ave. fashion , Longboarder Magazine has joined the lowly Australian , Wayne Lynch & co. -Evolution Surf , in a lame attempt to sell their corporate bullshit surfboards ,by plastering T&A on the back cover. As usual , nothing worth teaching your surfing daughter or wife. Somehow though, the Australian advertisements consistently copy original themes. I think it’s Josh Baxter , in the Koa Surfboard ad , w/ the girl holding her breasts. In any case , we’ll see how the lines are drawn on this. In my case it’s just another boycott of another useless product. I thought Lynch was better than a sell out. There’s got to be some stressed out investers in there camp.

So what I they have a woman or guy with a double headed dildo in as many orfices. I buy what I want to buy, no amount of steam can influence my decision. I bought a Ford Taurus wagon, “built Ford Tough”, it is the biggest piece of shit car in the world. 3 transmission, 7 sets of front brakes, calipers, 3 sets of front rotors, rear drums and pads. 2 radiators, dead AC, Power steering, alternater, starter, computer moduals, dash and other lights. Now on the other hand, the Wayne Lynch’s are flawless in their shaping and are functional designs, are glassed at Moonlight Glassing and I dare any of you to find something wrong with craftsmen who have been plying their trade longer than you have been on this planet. I spent 4 hours just finish sanding one of the 7’6" balsa guns for Paul Naude today. It is a 5000.00$ board, so I put my portion of sweat into it, no cut corners on my end. By the way I don’t have a stake in the company, I’m just a contractor. Will the company be one of the big three? Probaly not, but you can’t buy a better board, you can spend a lot less, but an Evo’s not for you.

I thought the advertizing was soooooooooooooo stupid, girls and no real board info. The shapes were lifted from other programs and not very good ones at that. The money would have been better spent on what the boards were about. But there is a whole other can of worms that I CAN’T even talk about concerning the politics in this 2 ring circus.

Unfortunately, when a $20,000. ad page like this hits the streets, the message isn’t about craftsmanship. It’s about image. It’s degrading to my female surfing buddies who probably have a much bigger stake in the surf industry then any well crafted corporate surfboard ,. subcontracted , or not. When this type of approach takes place it takes all the emphasis off off you , the craftsman , and onto something that surfing , and especially longboarding , has no place for. The sell is $'s, if you want to sell "Longboard Magazine " , drop the Evolution ad’s. Evolution Surf has every right to print what they want, and how there Product be advertised. My advice is : next time out for a surf , check out how many more women are sharing their grace and style with you. Some are cordless , some ride shortboards too. In my town , so many women rip harder harder than most guys. There are plenty of craftsman to go around.

No there aren’t PLENTY of craftsmen to go around, there are a lot of journymen, but only a handfull of craftsmen.

As I reread my earlier statement on - more than a handful of craftsman- I regret that my writing is less than adequate. I did not mean to compare my friends as equal to you , Jim. I don’t know you , but I feel admiration for the great skill that you, obviously, have. I only meant to state that there are more than a handful of dedicated individuals who have the skill and integrity to shape w/ craftsmanship. I’d go to anyone of them for a board if needed. I have in many occasions. I will say that in light of the many flakes that pose as skilled workers, there are a lot of reasons for cynicism. I don’t mean to badger you. I think I made my other , larger, points clear. Again, sorry for the poor choise of words. --Skip

I never use this forum to slam dedicated craftsmen, but as you said, there are a jillion who pose as knowlegible shapers, when in reality, the buying public doesn’t have a clue. Ask someone who got a board shaped while they watched, if the shaper used a rusty surform or tuned a Stratavarius with his planer, they aren’t aware of what shaping is all about. This is why I offer my advise when I can for the novice to become more informed. I don’t use this forum to try to enrichen my pockets, when I first tried to make boards, I was met with closed doors and not a scrap of info was given up freely. I visit a lot of shapers and with all honesty, meet few who are competent tool men and even fewer who can keep all of the foam in a nice even keel. For the true watermen / craftsmen, kudos for sticking to your choosen field and becoming inspiratons and leaders, not followers of fashion.
amen Jim
Shapers never pick the ads. I mean, has there ever been a good Rusty ad? I haven’t seen the ad in question yet, but I do know that I’ve never seen an ad for a shaper that I liked. Maybe shapers should just stay out of the magazines all together.
