Guys I am doing a competition 6’0 for a pro wqs surfer to be named later. What is the glassing schedule for a wafer thin stick. I was going 4x4 with a 4ozpatch on the tail and 6oz patches over the fin pots. and another one on standby
First I’d try to find out the rider’s preference; is under 5 lbs mandatory, or is he OK with
5 1/2 or so and a little more durability.
Second I’d weigh the shaped core; if it’s under 3 lbs you can probably go with the full 4/4
deck and foot patch and come out around 5 (no fins). If the core’s more like 3 1/2 lbs and
the guy wants it light, you’re going to have to go with less glass.
The lam schedule you describe is actually a ‘‘stock’’ glass job in some circles. A lot of the pro
boards are single 4 decks with small foot patches. Some are staggered 4 (single nose, second
layer middle to tail).
An overlooked factor in this is how the lam schedule affects the flex and feel of PU/PE. Those
single 4 boards have a very different feel compared to the ones with twice as much glass on
the decks.
The really light PU boards last anywhere from 3 waves to 3 weeks of daily use. Most of the pros
stretch the life of their ‘‘good ones’’ by not riding them very much and/or not taking many chances
on them. (Unless it’s in a heat or the cameras are rollin’)
