Problem epoxy Glass

Hi every bodies !!! i hope you’re all ok here !!

So i’m nicolas from France, i’m a pro shaper, i make some kite board, Twintips and Alaia…

I do that since 4 years but i started when i was a kid to make skate and skimboards…

A friend of me tell me to go here and ask cos you’r a very sharp community !!

Please my english is a bit bad… i’m sorry for the mitakes eventual…

so i glass since a lot…  i realize all my board in local woodcores,   organic resin from Entropy, and organic glue etc…

but when i glass i have since a month a very prettu cool orange peel…  this is my problem…

i didn’t change anything… gloves for wood, clean, gloves for resin (no talc) i clean the board with white vinegar (since 4 years) never the shadow of a problem…

i use double potting for glass, in two dry and clean pots, my brush is a new one… my spalter is clean ( vineagr bath in a box with my brush)

before glass i sand, wtih  180 grain.  and then i glass the firt layer… when its tacky (2 or 3 hours after) i glass the second layer…

the problem is only on the first layer… i’m becoming crasy lol !!! i don’t undertsant the problème…

My room is pretty hot 20°C , no humidity …  not more or lass than before…

i send you a pic.

oh i give my site if you want to see my work…

i have juste send the model of my sandpaper since 1 month… do you think it can be the problem ?? i teste tomorrow with old sandpaper but really…i don’t think it’s the problem…

Thanks a lot and see you soon !!

Nicolas

looks to me like you got some kind of contamination.

I realize that you did everything the same but did someone else have access to your shop?

Looks like some kind of contaminant got on that board.

Hello Crisp how are you ???

thanks you for your kind word !!!

So i found the solution today… (but ihave this problem since one month… incredible…)

very simple…

I use an old cardboard to store my cleaning cloth…

And i saw in the cardboard a liquid… from a bottle of liquidwax… i used that when i started 4 years ago) … but not now.

so i guess my children, may be or me, we have not close the bottle correctly …

and then my cleanning cloth is contaminated …

but you’re right , it is a contamination !!!

i try this afternon with not my old cloth looooool and i 'll say to you…

See you very soon !!!

Nicolas

Hello !!!

So …I test today… and no… the problem doesn’t come from that…

Ouch i’m fed up with that… all my glass are really rotten…

before i had never had any problem… juste 5 bubbles…

I don’t understand…

Nobodie come in my shope…

Did you wipe it with anything before the fill coat?  Did you blow it off with a compressor (potential oil spray), did you use a cheap hair dryer on it?

That picture show a very very severe case.

all the best

Hi Greg and thanks a lot for your answer ^^

yes i wipe it cos i clean all my board before glass… since a lot of years…    i clean with white vinegar alcool organic… the same big bottle…

my problem is really like refusal (good word ??)   like fat traces…

no i don’t use air compressor, and no hair dryer…

thanks to help me !!!

Hello NiNeee -

I would skip the vinegar wipe even if it has worked for you in the past.

I have had similar issues with certain types of wood… sometimes even the same type of wood from a different tree or lumber yard batch contains more oils than others.  Redwood for example can be easy or hard to coat with epoxy.  I had a tray I tried to coat and it seemed that no matter how I tried to clean between coats, the oils would rise to the surface and contaminate the next layer.  I just kept sanding and recoating and ‘filling’ each fisheye… Eventually I got something that was acceptable but even that took some sanding of the final coat and a sprayed-on clear coat.

Just to test my theory that it might be the wood… do you have any clean balsa sheets you can test coat?  I have far fewer issues with balsa than some other woods that are more oily.  If you mix the same epoxy in the same bucket and apply the same way and it still fisheyes, I’m stumped, but if it lays down smooth on the balsa, it could be the wood you’re using.

I have had some success wiping oily wood down with a clean acetone soaked rag before immediately coating with thinned epoxy as a sealer coat. Take a squeegee and scrape off any excess.  Let it cure, lightly scuff with sandpaper and recoat.  It might take several coats to get a smooth finish.

A final note… I have heard of people having fisheye problems when using stearated sandpaper.

Hello John and Thanks for your very intersting answer…

wow i know that on this forum people are very sharp ^^

So i forgot to tell that the wood is laminated with 3 layers of fiberbglass 160g… then the wood is not in contact with my vinegar…

But… i’av found the problem…

I made on a board 4 parcells…

Then the one :   old papersand8  80 no vinegar

then the 2           oldpapersand 80 with vinegar

the 3          new papersand 40 no vinegar

          the 4          new papersand 180  no vinegar…

But in each parcell i put some wax… juste a trace,

and i put my new polish  (i have since one month)    and this is the problem…

And you know what ? before i made polish myself with vinegar and  ground powder of Diatomée… you know that stuff ??? its an organic product for polish and remove dogs ticks and fleas !! and it works for polish (it’s noted on the label)

and the result is perfect…

My new polish is a bit better yes !!! but its F… all my glass…

The problem is, on my machine polish… fine drops flied away… and dry… … the fine powder is the problem…

I’m clear ??

So !!! ok… i have juste to clean all my shop… and my cloths…i’m so happy to do that !!!

Thanks a lot for all your answers and i’ll chek here new informations and threads !!

Nicolas

I know nothing…nothing…nothing…I am a total hack.

You are lost… I lay down amazing epoxy glass jobs…I post Swaylocks threads on how to get there… WTF???

Vinegar?

NO!

got me stuffed.

And confused

Hello !!!

Before this problem , all my glasses was really good…

and then the problem is coming very gradually…

That’s why i was confused…

But i think i don’t really understand your comment stingray and Yorky  : ) (my Englis is pretty bad )

i join here a pic before this solved problem !!!

thanks !!!

ps : on the pic : no fisheyes and no orange peel…   i glass every days since a long time… and it was very long to have a good result… i was really happy of my glasses… bafore that stuff… ok now its finished… i ever use white alcool vinegar to clean… and its organic and effective. : )   (no vinegar , but white alccol vinegar… i can’t find the correct translation sorry…)

new pic ^^

Glad you got that sorted out.  The latest pic looks good.  I’m giving the whole operation (I viewed the website) 2 thumbs up.  Do you perhaps mean ‘denatured alcohol?’

Hi John !! thanks  you for your comment :)

yes its an old pic before ly problem , but i inted to find this result hehe !!

So for my vinager :) in fact it's simple it is a cleaning vinager...... to clean WC or what you want.

No possible to cook !!!

i shape since 4 years as pro and i use it … really it’s juste awesome.  but here in France a lot of people use it everydays…

as you read on my firt message… i make board with local wood, organic epoxy resin (not 100% not possible fir the moment)

made in USA i guess you know : Entropy Resin.   very very good one… i use CLR04 with fast Hardener

short… i like to work with natural material… (ok epoxy is not 100% natural.)  but people here are very intersting with my work cos i use this method…

olalala my english lol…  imagine speak with me in french… may be u know… a lot of American speaks french…

So thx again… i 'll keep in touch with you all !!!

what a very good site !!

You’re good my fine Frenchman.  I don’t think you need the vinegar or alcohol.  Clean the wooden blank with a damp cloth or “tack” cloth.  Then proceed to lay-up.  There should be no problem.  Chances are you changed something or someone changed something on you.

Good.  The consensus is that it was something you wiped with.  Don’t do that again.

I have a paragraph or two written by Greg Loehr (Mr Epoxy) on how to avoid the fish eye thing.  I’ll look for it tomorrow.  brief summary:  sand the laminated board lightly with some new 220 sand paper all over, handle with paper towels to the glass rack where you will apply the fill coat, don’t wipe with anything, don’t wash the board, (Optional: squeegee on about 2 ounces and let it get tacky (called a cheater coat)), apply fill coat.

All the best

Did you have fish for diner?

Yes –  it’s just not that complicated. Follow Greg & Greg’s advice.  Keep it simple.  Lowel

looooool  i like this movie !!! it’s juste stupid and funny !!

Yes i know my problem… i explain you…

I bought a polish past… 1 month ago… it works very nice… but when it dry… the polish become a very very fine blue powder…

impossible to see it if you don’t know…

Then this powder contain a fat part… hen you touch it, you don’t feel its fat…

this powder fly away in all my shop and my cloths (trousers and jacket )

when i sand, i spread the powder… this is my  recent problem…

But all of you, you wrote some very very good stuff and i like !! thanks a lot…

this is a pic from tests i 've done  and in the circle its my shit polish  and a wax polish i used before…

thanks and see you very soon !!

ummmmmm.
