My dad and I have recently started making foam boards out of divinycell h80 foam. After we shape and glass we notice that there are spots on the board where the glass doesnt seem to soak into the foam and we see “patches” where it hasnt fully adhered. We are putting the pigment into the first coat of resin for color. Being new to the trade Im looking for a little insight on what we can try to correct the problem and get the boards with pigment to come out smooth. Thanks in advance.
A couple of questions first. Are you straining your pigments before you mix them into the resin? What do you mean by “where the glass doesn’t soak into the foam”? Another thing is that if you have high and low spots on the shaped foam then you’ll have pools of resin built up in some spots and other spots will be dry which could explain the “patches”. Look forward to hearing back.
Sounds like some high spots that got squeegied dry, in the laminating process.
Sorry I wanted to say where the resin isnt soaking into the foam.I dont think my pops sanded the top or bottom of the board very much if at all. He probably only did the rails. Would this inconsistancy cause the glass not to adhere? We just put a a few teaspoons of pigment into the resin with out straining it. Thanks for tolerating my lack of experience and for the replies.
the d-cell can soak in a lot of resin. most seal it with a thickened resin prior to glassing.
When you seal it with the thicker resin, you basically wet it without the glass let it dry, then glass it?
I took a picture of the problem on one of the test boards. You can see in the photo the spots where the resin doesnt seem to stick to the foam. Hopfully this pic will give a little insight on my problem. [img_assist|nid=1076359|title=Skimboard glassing problem|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75]
Better photos would help......High density foam is good.
yep next time try sealing the foam prior to glassing.
Do I seal it with the same resin I use to glass the board? Or should I use a different kind? Thanks
Slow down.
What is "divinycell h80 foam" ? Slow and steady is the key....how long is a skim board.....
It would be a nice slow walk through the park...glassing a skimboard...compared to a longboad.
Slow, steady, smooth......yeah...I can feel it.............got it?
Grasshopper has you covered. H80 soaks resin.
Options are, vacuum bag it, with the wet cloth **DOWN. **Let gravity be your friend to keep the epoxy in the cloth and not in the foam.
Seal the foam, to fill the holes. Resin with micro spheres. Add catalyst before you add the microspheres, or you wont get it to kick right. Squeege on the paste, and then glass when it cures. Add microspheres and mix it to the consistency of mayonaise. Wear a dustmask when using microspheres. The stuff is so light and airy that you will get it in your lungs if you don’t wear a mask.
Same can be done with epoxy, just mix part a and part b together before you add the microspheres.
Where do you live? I get mine from Revchem.
It’s the high density foam you are going to start using any day now. Once you go tech, you can’t go back. =)
