Probox fins?

Where can I find Probox fins besides the ones on their site? Just looking for more of a selection.

Thanks

r

Fibreglas Fin Co. makes the fins for ProBox and distributes the system.

Rick,

I have to go by tomorrow to pick up a couple of fins. I'll see if I can get a few pictures of the fins they have. They say that the website is being updated soon and a fin brochure is on the way.

Mike

mike,

good deal thanks.

do they a good selection?

r

Rick,

They can make just about any type of fin you want. The last time I was there they had just shipped out most of their stock and were busy cutting out and foiling more fiberglass fins. They also carry a standard line of plastic fins for thrusters, side bits, and quads. This is my quads set up I picked up a couple months ago. I wanted to try and get some pics of the factory to show the class at Cerritos College. Like said earlier I'll try to get some more pics to let you see what they have.

Why do you need a selection? Tell Larry at Fiber glass fins what you want and he will make it for you. Why limit yourself to what some company tells you is the best fin shape? Get them custom and get all the fin shapes you ever want. You can do the same with all the other fin companies as well.

it looks like they sell blanks with the bases pre molded…endless possibilities

rickrickrick, You can get custom Fiber Glass fins from me at Fibre Glas Fin Co. or custom Fiber Glass fins from Steve Mock at Island Fin Designs on the North Shore of Hawaii who also Dist. Probox Finsystem there.

Rick,

I finally got around to taking some pics of fins I picked up a couple of months ago. If you've seen my post on the fin factory Larry was talking about showing me some fins that go back to 70's and maybe get a few photos of fins being foiled.

Whats the best way to yank out a finbox system?

i.e. Probox …Dremel tool?

HalSose,

The day I was at the factory Matt from Bing Surfboards was talking about fin box damage caused by impact on the fin. One system he said would have torn the tail of the board off compared the fin screw holes on the ProBox system but any ways he said to remove the damaged box he just slowly routed out the old box which left a clean hole to install the new fin box. I think would you have more control while removing the old fin box if you have the install kit. If you contact Larry at Fibre Glas Fin Co. he would be the best source to ask about the repair.

Not meaning this as sarcastic, I just want to make sure - you do know that Probox is FCS compatible, right?

a week or so ago, i removed a damaged fin box with a dremmel — not something i would ever want to do again. don’t get me wrong, it’s doable, and if you’re really in a pinch, do it. but for the amount of effort, your far better off to route out the old box rather than dremmel around it and pop it out. no router? – borrow one. can’t find a buddy with a router? – eBay it (you can find tools on the cheap). need it quick? – go to the hardware store and buy one. you can always return it if you don’t want to keep it, or if you find a better deal elsewhere…but it’s definitely one of those “must have” tools.

EDIT: i like ProBox, too. that is all.

can I use this $39 1hp Plunge Router with the Probox jig?

Hal - if you don’t have a router it can be done with a Dremel tool, just takes a bit of patience. Get a reinforced cutting wheel, they make them in just the same width as a ProBox box (strange but true). These will cut/melt the box material, so wear gloves (if you pick up a cut chunk it’s like hot glue for a couple seconds, will stick to skin!). Slice the box out in chunks or layers. Don’t go too fast or you’ll break the cutting wheel (you are wearing goggles, right?) You can actually remove it and still have the original hole intact if you want.

HalSose,

I was just practice yesterday with the router bit and new jigs from ProBox and a $20 router that I got from harbor freight to see how it would work. The $20 laminate trim router worked great. I just needed some practice setting it to the right depth. I don't know if it would be good enough to take out an old box. When I was at the fin factory the only router I had seen around there was the Ryobi trim router.

Mike

Bud,

I've seen Larry make futures compatible with ProBox. He just won't let me take any pics.

Mike

Aloha Hal:

I took a look at this router and I don’t see any reason why it would not work with our installation jig as it’s base is not too large. The size of the base is the main concern as the jig is fairly small and fits a trim router much better, but this router appears to have a fairly small base anyway so it should be fine.

Howzit Robin, When my small router died on me I just taped a thin round piece of plywood to my plunge router bottom and punched through the plywood which gave me an almost solid (except for the bit hole) surface and had no problems.Aloha,Kokua
