Taking your suggestions on board.

Here is what I’ve done so far, just getting one side right for the moment then copy the shape to the other side ready for shaping.

I tend to agree with you Bert on the Windsurfer nose, that’s coming off tonight and thinning the outline accordingly. Goning to settle on 19.5" width. BTW, I cut this before you posted your design.

I’ll post a piccie when thats done.

Those metal plates stuck into the windsurfer blank for bindings support finally caught up with me.

I cut the flimsy left overs out intending to glue a fresh block of foam in and shape to match, but I looked at it and thought…“I can do anything with this blank, it’s only taken me 8 weeks to get this far”.

So I did, I might not ever get the chance again for a long time…

Here it is…still need to tidy up the nose and tail blocks.

Captain Goodvibes would be so proud of me… Joanne suggested the position of the flyer/wing closest to the tail… I was going to put them further up.

I’m having so much fun with this, final smooth and then airbrushing…finish off with 2x6oz on top and 2x4oz on the hull…

Michael Peterson , also …

compare with his triple flyer fangtail … [you just forgot the third flyer , and the rail channels a la ‘Aquafiend’s’ “stingray” ]

But , glassing it should be enough of a challenge as IS ! thank God for epoxy resin , eh ??]

So, what width , length, and thickness did it end up being [so far], Grant ?

And how far up ARE those flyers from the pintail’s point ?

What width is the board at the tail now ?

And at the flyers ?

I can’t wait to see it in the ‘flesh’ on friday mate !!

[now you’ll HAVE to ride it down south !!]

ben

I’m with you Keith, just glass it and ride it!

Thats awsome Hicksy!!!

Innovation in shaping is something that is often ignored these days… now just glass it and let us know how it goes.

I’ll have to remeasure it tonight but from memory the first flyer is 10" up and at 12" it’s 10.5" wide, below the flyer it’s 8 5/8" wide, the second flyer is about 22" up.

Board width is 19.5" at the wide point. Still tinkering with the idea of blending in those abrupt edges of the flyers into the body of the board to help with the glassing/look of it. Small channels leading into the base of the flyers may also be on the cards

Ok people now it’s time for painting. Being a graphic designer to hundreds of clients I have no real idea on what to do with this, just like a plumbers house always has leaky taps.

I’ve masked off what I want to paint and I’ve got a yellow base in mind but buggered if I know what else to do.

Here’s the spray gear…

I NEED SOME IDEAS…please remember that this will be my first attempt at airbrushing.

Thanks

Hicksy

hiya Grant !

yellow and white and … ???

can you use those other colours on the garbo …the red , blue , green , black colours ?

So, how did your 'practice run ’ go ?

   ben

Do you remember Martin Potter’s “saint” twin fins of the early eighties ?

…green and yellow , often with a thick black [often jagged] line in between . [I must have a shot of them somewhere, I’m sure !]

Will you be masking the rails too, Grant ?

ben

The test spray went OK, just finding out consistancies distances etc.

Yeah I’ve got all the primary colours black, white, red, blue, yellow so I can mix up different colours but I’m thinking of a yellow base to start with.

The area between the stringers is taped off so I can do something different on the foam inbetween and prevent spraying onto the wood.

Taking the girls to the beach now…

Martin Potter’s “the saint” twin fin

more aussie green and gold ! [pottz’s board]

Can’t believe how flat Perth is at the moment…sux badly…

No I’m not doing anything to the rails further up, just that section taped off at the rear. I’m not that confident with the airbrush yet, maybe with a bit more practice I’ll attempt that.

cheers

Hicksy

and will you be taping the bottom of the rails at the back, to protect from overspray ?

[remember the tail of my last board , where I DIDN’T tape off to guard against overspray ??]

just a thought …

ben

no waves at all at Mullaloo either , eh ?

I’ve been hanging inside all day as a result , alternating between watching snapper’s waves , and a couple of surfing websites …how’s the commentators at snapper eh …apart from shimooka …all world champs…carroll, botha , lynch , M.R. … whoo …and Cheyne [silver edition / masters world champ …all they need is curren and elko now !!]

OK so this is what I’ve done so far, all the tape is in place so there’s heaps more to do.

The deck is the same scheme, pretty pleased for a first go at airbrushing.

cheers

Hicksy

I LIKE it !

It will be good to see when it’s “unmasked”…

THEN … glassing , finbox , waves …surf it !! [Hopefully, by april, eh ?]

I can’t wait to photograph you on it … I’ll definately buy a waterproof disposable camera , and try and sneak an autumn dawn patrol for THAT one !!

I’d love to have a go on it too of course ! [maybe catch up with Gray Murdoch for the launching , eh ??]
