Project number two - 5'0" Mini-Simmons

soft forgiving rails forward seem to be best especially with the low rocker…eggy rails will work fine…some pics would help with being able to give suggestions…

i’ll snap some pics when i get home… here’s the only other pic i have so far.

I’m planning on finishing this board this week, but want your guys opinion on the rails, overall thickness, step deck, foil, etc.

I’m contemplating bringing down the overall thickness a bit (it’s at 2.75" right now) to maybe 2.5" since the board is just over 22" wide. I’m 6’0" tall and weigh 175 lbs, which is why I used the dims I did. What do you guys think of the board so far? What should I change/leave the same?

It looks great! Leave the thickness and just make another one thinner if you find its too much.  I'm 6' 165 (summer weight)  and i did one at 2.75, but it was EPS and so boyant it felt like I was doing push-ups when i had to duckdive and I had to do it a second or two earlier than I would on a thinner board.  But that thing came out of the water quick after the wave passed and it paddled great and caught everything that a SUP or longboard would have.

Yeah definitely lookin good man! Keep after it!

If it was me I would bring the step deck back abit further and thin the nose out, leaving the thickness at the centre the same as you have now. Are you keeping the rails as shown in the picture ??

:)Zac

so i thinned the board out (as per your recommendations), flattened the nose and tried to bring the step deck back farther. excuse the nose in the second picture, i haven’t turned it down yet.

do you guys think i should go thinner? what now? if i go thinner i can make the rails harder down rails instead of soft like they are and i feel like i can still bring the step deck back more. let me know what you guys think!

here’s where i’m at now:

hey guys

i’d really like your feedback on where i’m at right now, i’m looking to finish this board up tomorrow. the thickness and rails feel fine, still have to hit the nose with the screen. otherwise would you guys change anything before i finish sand and paint?

board is just about done, blended the deck lines into the rails and gave my rails a harder down edge. also painted the bottom 1/3 of the board dolphin grey.

now i’m on to fin placement. i’ll be using standard simmons half moon keels, what should my fin placement be like?

what kind of paint do you use wouldnt mind giving it a go myself ??

i just use tempera paint, turned out great!

here’s a pic after paint:

and a pic of the other board we shaped and painted with the same paint:

looks coool !

my friend wants a yellow with red stripes will give this a go with the paint you recomend.

Did you spray the color or brush it on?

brushed it on. we wanted it to have a “sketchy” edge so we didn’t tape it off, just marked off lines so it would be square and even. we dry brushed the paint once it was on to give it some texture and keep it looking more rustic i guess.

so i’m back from my 2-week vacation and this board is ready to be dropped off. i was given a set of birch gephart keels and want to drop this board off ASAP for glassing. do you guys think those fins would be fine? or should i wait and make my own?

Make your own and to bad its not going to be ready for this swell! Good thing there is another swell a week out, saw some shots from newport and it looked fun hope you got a few.

after talking to our glasser we decided we’re going to cut 1-2" off the bottom of the fins i have. hoping to drop the board off tomorrow!

board is done!

Nice Job Man!

Hey I’m gonna start sending you pics of my boards so you can name them!  Freakin priceless!
