Anyone out there using them in there resin? And if so what are you using and where are you getting it? A drop of DMA or cobalt goes along way, and anyone using any types for epoxy?
RR sells one for some of their epoxies.
X-55, I believe.
Ghetto, I still use cobalt. Mostly for resin pinlines and resin colors. It comes in two strenghs that I know of.
That’s my secret purple sauce.
Havn’t seen DMA in a long time. That’s some old-school chemicals there.
Makes for some bitchin smoking hot batches eh?

Like newschoolblue said there’s X-55 for Resin Research. Works good for making hot coats and glosses kick fast. Great for ding repairs too.

Barry, cobalt comes in handy, especially for pinlines, and a drop or two for a hot coat and they tend to go off better and not avalanche. I know the sell it by the pint around the corner from your shop at Surf Supply. Yeah the x-55 for epoxy, haven’t used that much, i know it has phosforic acid in it and gets epoxies off faster. Anyone else doing any research out there?
As for the hot batches nothing beats cobalt, DMA, and MEKP together in excess, without resin, just don’t smell it, and have a fire extinguisher handy.
Yeah, Greg Webster used to make some multi-colored resin bombs with that stuff.
Made for some really cool looking pigment art on the floor.
Speaking of hot batches, when I worked over at Javi’s, his clean-up guy dumped some MEKP in a nearly empty resin drum. When I came outside, there was a column of smoke shooting out through the drum at least 30’ in the air.
Love-it!
Fun with chemicals.

i havent herd Greg Webster’s name in a long time, i used to work with him
such an interesting and fun person, he always had a way to make me laugh
Hey Barry have you seen the photo of him laming boards in the nude only wearing an apron? a vary talented person, he laminated one of my favorite boards for me
Hey getto rat if your ever down here next to me and Barry bring a couple of containers and i will give you some coblt and DMA, i have enough to last me most of my life
for the life of me though i cant remember the name of the place where i bought it though, some where in down town, its been a few years but ill try to find the recite and let you know if i find it
Plenty of X-55 experience here… Thing about that stuff is, the effect ramps DOWN over time. The initial kick comes faster, especially if you leave it in the bucket. But it stays gooey for almost the same amount of time. It does shorten the flip time somewhat, but it mainly shortens the pot life. Which is to say, if you want to set hardware with it, you gotta be careful. The up side is it sets up quicker. The down size is it can melt foam or squeeze boxes and plugs up and out of their holes.
Sdrepairman,
If you’ve worked in this business for any time, you’ve worked with Greg. He is one of those guys who’ve worked everywhere. So crazy (in a good way) and so talented. Ever seen his collages with bits of pigmented resin fiberglass bit? Absolutely beautiful. He was my roommate in this building when it was Walters Ding Repair. He glasses some extremely different stuff. I watched him glass a Hawk board. A complete bird all done with scrap pieces of glass with colored pigments. Feathers and all!
Classic guy. He stops by occasionally.

A little late back, but Webster is one of those guys who is very polarizing, yet I absolutely love him. A younger guy whose old school. A great laminator, and really can do it all. People around here think I am a bit gruff, well Webby is waaay more; still he’s a straight shooter and a hell of a nice guy with a demented sense of humor. I wish him the best wherever he is. I think he is more misunderstood because of his intensity, which is often over the top intense. I wish I got to see him more often, we have had some fun times.
