So im intending to shape a stand up paddle board in the very near future! Now i work almost exclusively in Polyester apart form the odd epoxy i get in for repair. So heres my question im 6’4 and around 12.5 stone and the only PU SUP blank i can get my hands on ( i live in Ireland so Seabase and Homeblown are my only suppliers) is the US Blanks 10’10T im just wondering is this suitable i mean its 32" wide and 5" thick whichc seems like loads but then its only 10’10 which seems small especially since this will be the first time I SUP.
Any advice on any aspect of building a SUP in PU would be most appreciated.
Better to have a good width and thickness than lots of length, IMHO. Go with the US Blank, it’s good. Be prepared for quite a lot of mowing (hope you got a good planer…) Shaping is not any more difficult than any good sized longboard: the longer the board, the harder it is to maintain a nice flowing curve. Finding wide enough fiberglass cloth might be an issue, although I think that Seabase carries that. Think extra layers on the rails to take care of paddle dings. Also, there is a small handy accessory that you should not forget: it’s a plastic handle that can be routed into the foam (just like you would for a fin-box) and it provides easier carrying of the “beast”.
Ya i was kinda thinking width over length was the way to go thanks for the advice Balsa.
Glassfibre supplies in Cork carry 1 m wide 200g/m2 which is pretty darn close to 6oz. Seabase max width is 80cm 6oz which would leave me with very little wrap on the rails which as you said need extra strengthening anyway.
My planer is unfortunalty not what id wish it to be im slowly but surely expanding and building up my tool kit i have pretty much everthing i think i need except a good planer. Im using an ole black and decker that iv modified the base plate so it no longer catches on the foam its alright iv shaped a couple of boards with it but none this long so we’ll see
