I’ll be spending a month down there starting mid-august and I was hoping to get some tips from those that have been there before.
I’ll be flying into mexico city around 1 AM and I plan on taking a bus into puerto. I’m having trouble finding any reliable information on the transit system down there and any info regarding departure times, prices, recommended routes, etc. would be great.
Any swaylocks crew down there? If I completely thrash one of my boards down there is there ding repair available or should I be packing my own supplies?
hey losos…dont know about transpo from mc…sounds like a real long gnarly ride…
the bb is an ass-kicker…you gotta bring some strong boards…if you dont you’ll run out of them…yeah there’s plenty of ding repair dudes available too…if your not used to powerfull surf it will take about a week to get into it…the barrels are intense…puntas is super fun but im sure its a zoo when the bb is big…watch out for drunks on weekends…pretty roudy bunch…i saw the most gorgeous sunset ever (and i’ve seem plenty of them) at the swimmers beach, west end.
Thanks guys. I’ll have a 7’6" and two 6’1"s with me. I’ve surfed big waves before (biggest was around 15ft) but I’ve never surfed big hollow waves before, so I’ll take your advice and take it easy for the first week or two. I’ve heard the “don’t wear a leash” recommendation a number of times before – how far is the paddle in when you lose your board?
Any info on the bus system? I know to expect about a 12 hour bus ride costing roughly $50 each way. How much do they charge you to bring a large board bag with you? Is it better to take the bus through Oaxaca or the one through Acapulco? The Oaxaca route looks like the straightest shot but everything I’ve come across online (though not much) recommends going through Acapulco.
Howzit Losos, Last time I was in Ixtapa they were building an express way to Acapulco so which ever route takes that road might be the fastest.Aloha,Kokua
"how far is the paddle in when you lose your board? "
At higher tides, it’s not uncommon to come tumbling up onto the sand berm right behind your board. Now, if you eat the drop on the outside peak, you’ll be swimming in amongst some powerful water moving that’s for sure! Something one of the locals told me that really helped my confidence level -
"Once you paddle over that ledge…your hooked!
There’s a full technique to making the drops out there and pulling up under the lip, unfortunately it’s that same old saying i’m sure you’ve heard before - " hesitate, and your toast". Good luck! You will get tubed!!
Here’s one from a trip back in '97 on a 7’8" sunset pintail by Brian Fredrickson. They were calling it 3 to 5 ha ha.
