Hey SwayBros,
Heading to the Rincon area in Puerto Rico in the beginning of January for a quick surf trip.
I take many flight to get there, so bringing a board with me will come out to about $450. I was thinking it would be cooler to pick up a local board, and maybe leave it there when i am done.
Any recommendations on picking up a 6’ shortboard for a 185 pound guy while I am there?
I am also looking for a longboard for a friend of similar size.
I have checked craigslist and some other classified ads and didn’t see much boardwise.
Also any advice on local breaks is greatly appreciated and what breaks it compares to on Oahu.
Thanks Harry!
Been meaning to give you a ring, and stop by for a beer to see what new shapes are in the making.
I am stoked, I have a family trip to the Big Island, and am hoping to sneak a surf session or two in, then on to Puerto Rico, and back to Oahu for my permanent surf trip:)
Just wanted to say thanks for the greenroom recommendation. Clemente is the guy down there, and he rents/sells board and runs a really nice vacation rental. We already had a rental, so didn’t stay there, but would be a good launching point for all the breaks.
It was also pretty neat because all the boards were boards I would want to buy, not rentals. They would be something I would see off of swaylocks, which was pretty badass.
My buddy and I pretty much lived off of $5 sandwiches from the econo grocery store and local coffee. Outstanding food.
The waves were pretty amazing too. Got there on a dropping swell, but Puerto Rico is a lot like Hawaii, there is always good swell somewhere. Most of the breaks I surfed were a much shorter paddle then I am used to, which was nice.
The day i left 10ft 12sec swell came in which shut out most breaks, but a bunch of others turned on like magic. Met some pretty neat surfers, even learned a little about connection between puerto rico and hawaii, back from plantation days.
No real good pictures of me surfing, since we were both surfing… But here are some pictures from the last day of breaks I didn’t get a chance to surf.
One wave is too small, too big, and two are just right!
Would have been cool to meet them, but I had to leave last week, and back to my permanent vacation. I am back on Oahu, which welcomed me with an out of season pumping south swell the day after my flight got back. good times!
