I finally understood exactly what your saying. In the words of Raoul Duke, “Dont take any guff from those f–kin swine.”
“…Life goes on Within you and Without you…” George Harrison
“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you get what you need.” The Glimmer Twins
I think always get what I NEED, whether I like it or not.
Live: farther out. farther in. farther on.
Whats up with you guys and all of these song lyrics? Now I have that song from the TV Program “Green Acres” echoing through my head. You know…“Greeeeeeeeeeeeeen Acres is the place to be.Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaarm living is the thing for me” etc. geeze I need a drink.
a saying we both may recall: “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem”.
though it’s ever more difficult to be part of the solution in this ever more complex world. ‘select a reality’ indeed.
your mileage may vary. accept no substitutes.
Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.
— Max Ehrmann, 1927
Don’t even know who this M. Ehrmann is or why i would even entertain absorbing his wisdom. But reading this 15-20 years ago probably helped keep me from ‘choking’ various reef locals with big mouths in tight groups at spots i don’t frequent anymore! I’m over it…revenge is expensive these days anyway.
Yea max and verily we go along…ambrose… unfortunately max got over used there for a while and lost his impact but now in these trying times his words are refreshing and welcome … thanks surfhungry san
I am just striving to be the person my dog thinks I am!
I’m Tuna and I approve this message.
no worries.
Many people erroneously claim this poem, The Desiderata, was found in Old Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore, in 1692, but it was truly written in 1927 by a stocky, middle-aged, Indiana attorney named Max Ehrmann. The church had adopted it and used it in a flyer as an affirmation of faith. I know this because I was a tadpole in Baltimore, and it is a piece of the local lore.
Max wasn’t a surfer, but he should have been. He was, however, a poet, and his other writings are worth reading as well. Soul mates are where you find them.
If you really need a calming, centering affirmation to recite while shaping, or if your resin is kicking too fast and your lams aren’t done:
memorize “Deteriorata” by Tony Hendra; here’s a version of it I found on the internet:
"From: James Thorson jthorson@CWIS.UNOMAHA.EDU
Subject: Deteriorata
-
You are a fluke of the universe; you have no right to be here.
-
Go placidly among the noise and waste and remember what comfort there may
be in owning a piece thereof.
-
Avoid quiet and passive persons unless you are in need of sleep.
-
Rotate your tires.
-
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself, and heed well their
advice, even though they be turkeys.
-
Know what to kiss and when.
-
Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do.
-
Whenever possible, put people on hold.
-
Be comforted in the face of all aridity and disillusionment and despite
the changing fortunes of time, there is always a big future in computer
maintenance.
- You are a fluke of the universe; you have no right to be here. Whether
you hear it or not, the universe is laughing behind your back.
-
Remember the Pueblo.
-
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate.
-
Know yourself.
-
If you need help, call the FBI.
-
Exercise caution in your daily affairs, especially with those persons
closest to you: that lemon on your left, for instance.
- Be assured that a walk through the ocean of souls would scarcely get
your feet wet.
-
Fall in love, therefore; it will not stick to your face.
-
Gracefully surrender the things of youth: birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan.
-
And let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
-
Hire people with looks.
-
For a good time, call 606-4311.
-
Ask for Candy.
-
Take heart in the deepening gloom, that your dog is getting enough
cheese.
- And reflect that whatever fortune may be your lot, it could only be
worse in Milwaukee.
- Therefore, make peace with your god, whatever you conceive him to be:
Hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
- With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal, the world
continues to deteriorate.
- Give up… You are a fluke of the universe; you have no right to be
here. Whether you can hear it or not, the universe is laughing behind
your back.
The source I have says this was printed in a 1976 issue of The
Wittenberg Door, and is especially dedicated to those who think that the
“Dessiderata” is profound. I recall hearing it sung, also, on the short-
lived National Lampoon radio program."
Thanks for the laugh. It’s good to have balance in one’s life. The really bizarre thing is that the affirmation and the “anti”-affirmation are equally valid. The cosmos does, after all, have the last laugh, even if we don’t get the joke.
PS. I happen to be old enough to remember the Pueblo incident, in close proximity.
PPS. Hey, what’s the area code on that good-time phone number?
But I never rotate my tires. Except that, I guess, anytime they’re rolling. Rotating? Dunno. I’m just a dumb surfer.
