The
design looks very pratical and from what I understand Doug Haut the
designer is highly respected. The dems would be about 6’4" x 14.5 x 20.5 x 14.5 x 2.5.Seems more uiversal than a buscuit type board .just have not heard any buzz about these
boards. What can you tell me?
i took one out on a demo and it was a fun board...catches waves easily...i only had limited time on it in small mushy waves...but yeah nothing bad to say about that shape at all
Is this something I could just take to a local shaper and say “give me a roundpin fish” or would it be a bit tricky to get the template for the outline? Seems like it could be the best of both worlds for me as I have a hard time catching waves but like the hold and smooth turns of a pintail. Any thoughts?
Ekim, I think you could go to Freddy's and buy a bag of pumpkin seeds. Pull a good looking one out and take it to your shaper. (who is your shaper? Wher in OR are you?)
Anyway, that is what Mike Hynson did way back in the early 70's when he was pretty much Rainbow surfboards. Basically a roundpin with the wide point behind the center.
I laminate for Haut among others and have laminated literally hundreds of those pumpkin seeds. Generally they have a slightly wider tail than nose (pretty standard) with the wide point just slightly ahead of center (one or two inches) and are single to double concave. My 5’10 is 19 5/8" wide and 2 3/8" thick with a 14 1/2" nose and 14" tail (i think, its not in front of me) EPS/epoxy and a quad, it has a custom rocker and a slightly different foil than a stock model. I finished off the machine cut blank and turned the rails a little different than a stock model which usually have pretty soft down rails. I have never ridden a stock model but mine is a great board, works in 2’ to 8’ surf and is unbelievably fast but still very maneuverable with tons of drive. We have shipped custom boards from Haut up to Portland and beyond so if you want to go custom (which i recommend) you can call the shop in SC and order one, otherwise try to take the order to your local shaper and see if they can replicate it. the surftech Santa Cruz models work well from what I hear but are a little chattery in bumpy surf but quite durable. Just my two cents
Here’s what I would want. 6’4" x 20 1/2 x 2.45. This is the dims on the stock Santa Cruz popout but I wouldn’t want a board w/out a stringer. I did call the shop and Doug was nice enough to take a few minuets to talk with me.I guess he doesn’t use anything but future fins .I would really want Probox so I might try to hit up Art Collier to copy the shape. My guess by checking out the Santa Cruz popout is that it’s a fish rocker …“very flat”. Cool looking board. Props to Doug!
Olas, are you sure about the center point? It looks like dead center in this picture. Thanks for the info!
