Most of the posts in the archives regarding high performance quad fin placement use 11” front with a 5 1/2 - 5 3/4” back. That equates to a “cluster length” of 5 1/4 - 5 1/2”.
In this article: http://www.transworldsnowboarding.com/twbiz/industrynews/article/0,21214,1568999,00.html
, Rusty P. is describing his quad sets: 11” front and 4.375” back. That seems to be a substantially larger cluster length (6 5/8").
Is anyone else using a similar setup on performance quads? Pros / cons?
It seems that cluster on a quad could be a very touchy thing since side fins are working together? But then again there is now such variety in quad fins templates; what does it really matter where you put the boxes? - sorry that one’s a bit rhetorical!
Cheers
Check out Mckee surfing I think their an aussie company but they have tremendous info on quad set ups I found them mon a link from fcs europe.
Thanks for the reply Triggerr,
I have spent a decent amount of time checking the Mckee Quatro site. It seems that most boards there also have a larger cluster spread similar to what Rusty is describing (both small wave boards and guns, which I find interesting). But again, this seems to differ from much of the info previously posted on Sways…
I met a a french guy whowas running a quad that was fairly tight, and he had a 1inch trailer fin glassed right off the back of square tail, I guess it gave a little mor straight line grip was a bit weird though!! It kind of detracted from the point of a quad, I really wanna try a quad set up in a high perfoermance log could be fun!!
There are two styles of quad clusters. One style found on more fishy shapes is with both fore & aft fins mounted close to the rail and closer together (i.e. the 5-1/2 " spread)
The second is with the trailers closer to the stringer and more parallel. These are found on more performance type outlines (i.e. Cole, Stretch et.al.)
Thanks Tomatdaum,
Any insight on the variation in performance and feel of the two setups?
It seams that a lot of Rusty’s stuff regarding quad placement and fin templates is aimed at getting the top turn more thrusteresque - is this an element of the wider cluster?
The first type feels like a twin with a little more thruster-esque type of control. While the second feels more like a thruster with a bit more twin snap and speed.
