I’m going to try something different: a quad fish with deep swallow tail, short, thick ect. My shaper makes a good one & I’ll go with his recommendations in the end, but I want to have an general Idea of what I want first. I’m a little under 6’2 & about 205 pounds, usually ride a 6’4 modern fish or a 6’6 standard thruster. I’ve been told that you want to go shorter than you are tall and I tried a friends 5’11-21-2.6 at a reef break with softer waist- chest waves. While I could surf it, it did tend to bog on the slower sections and did not feel that much faster than my standard boards. I want something that is still skatey and loose but will also work in waist high surf as well. Does 6’3-21ish-2.6ish sound like overkill? I know there are many more variables, but what would be a good starting length? Thanks!!
I’d say go a little shorter and a little thicker…
At over 200 lbs you could do something like 6’2, but closer to 3 inches thick with a gently domed deck, and plenty of volume in the nose and tail. Flatter rocker will help you catch waves. A double concave that fades in about a third of the way from the nose and deepens through the fins and right out the back. Check out the Pavel Speed Dialer. The Dialer fins are nice and loose, and coupled with the double concave, gives plenty of drive and grab when you need it.
Keeping lots of volume along the stringer, but giving the deck a bit of dome, dropping into a down rail with a bit of edge will reduce the volume along the rail and add some responsiveness.
Thanks!! Great info. I’ll start with a thicker 6’2
