Question about printing on rice paper

I got rolls of rice paper to print on. I printed some yellow on an ink jet printer and lammed it onto a semi-dark green board. Needless to say the yellow faded a lost a lot of its ‘pop’

I have a screen printing press. Does anyone know what kind of inks should be used to screen print on rice paper? I only have plastisol inks for t-shirt printing. Will these work? I know they are NOT water based. I’m assuming that if I screen print a logo it will hold its color much better, is that accurate?

Thanks for any feedback.

Hi -

I learned right here on Swaylocks that the computer printers generally create logos that are light and more transparent than pro logos.

Some printer cartridges are designed for photo printing and might be more UV stable.

For a solid color 'pop' you might try taking a foam roller and lightly adding white water base paint to the back of your rice paper.  Several light coats are better... heavy coats bleed through.

Yeah I heard about white backings… especially if you want some white in the logo.

Since I have a screen printing press I am trying to figure out if I need special inks or if plastisol inks will work.

water based inks work fine

I use my speedball fabric ink...it works just fine.

dsantos,

If Plastisol Inks are the ones that need to be heat set I think they will not work well for rice paper laminates.  The regular waterbased acrylic screen printing inks are the ones to use.

As far as printing color you need ink like Epson uses, which is pigmented as opposed to what Lexmark uses which is actually a dye?   I think that HP and Canon may use the good ink as well.  Not sure about this but know that the Epson ink holds up pretty well.

Epson is good. Cheap manufacturer’s ‘compatible cartridges’ are the ones to avoid. The very best ink is “archival”…tested against fading for 200 years. I have tried backing logos with white but it is tricky the thinner the paper. I usually paint the board on foam or sandcoat then lam over. A lot of work compared to ready to go screened logos.

Howzit deadshaper, The inks Epson uses are archival inks bu they call them Durabrite ink, but the bottom line is they are pigment based inks and won't fade. Most inkjet printers use pigment ink for their black but dyeibased inks for colors and the dye inks fade. I found a company that sell compatible inks that are pigment based inks. I think the company is named simply ink. My problem is my hard drive on my desk top died last week and I had the company website in my favorites but those are gone now with every thing else. I am waiting for a new hard drive I ordered from Dell. The trick to doing the white paint is to do it first then do the logo print, that way any bleeding won affect he logo print. Aloha,Kokua

Hi DSantos!

I usually use my printer because my logo is just black. But few months ago I decided to do it properly, with screen printing, so I talked with a guy and asked him if he could make me the work. I gave him my logo, rice paper and a sample of an existing laminate Blank manufacterer logo.

As for the inks he told me he only uses waterbased inks, he does not work with plastisol because its harmful.

The end result was not good comparing it to the logo I got from the foamblank manufacterer, wich was done the right way, and I asume it was screenprinted with Plastisol because the colors are very strong y they look great.

Do some test. Not with a fresh shaped blank, but grab a piece of foam and try it there!

I print full lams on my printer:

nice sufding..  guessing that is a single print out?

I recently made a wedding surfboard guest signing book and, using a epson printer with durabrite ink, I printed out the engagment paper on plain white printing paper and resin'd it on the board. turned out great. Why is it nobody uses regular paper on a surfboard to avoid the background colors from popping thru?

Tuf I have had customers bring in Printed lams on regular paper before with out any problem.

However they were small. A full board lam should wet out and become clear and bond with the fiberglass on to the foam.

Regular paper would delam over time. Maybe as a wall hanger or with out use it would be a mute point?

it’s a lot of work to print rice paper through a printer however it can be done.

What ink do you use?

The ink is archival.

One cartridge is $80.00.

My printer has twelve colors or uses 12 of them.

To make posters is amazing from a high resolution photo.

Brand/supplier of archival quality pigment ink?
