Question about SurfMats

serious question: why aren’t they more popular? really. i am genuinely curious. besides the people that ride them why don’t more of the people that read these posts want them? please be honest. dale will take it OK. i think it actually has a lot to do with surfboard design as well, because the same question can be posed about hulls and longboards and…but for today i am really just curious why lots more people aren’t all over these great little surf vehicles. thanks.

My two cents. I think it goes back to the boogie (bookie!) thing. Once you learn to stand up and surf, the idea of lying down and shooting along on a mat is less attractive. Though even with my limited experience with mats (as a kid), and some time messing with the boogies, indicates to me that the mats win that decision easily. They are far superior IMO. However, once you are used to standing - riding prone feels kinda like only doing half the job. That said, what is great about mats is that they do not carry the same following as boogies. There are very few mat riders that are trying el-rollos and other useless tricks. Generally, the mats I’ve seen in action are looking for speed and the tube only. Much more worthwhile in my view. …EJ>>> serious question: why aren’t they more popular? really. i am genuinely > curious. besides the people that ride them why don’t more of the people > that read these posts want them? please be honest. dale will take it OK. i > think it actually has a lot to do with surfboard design as well, because > the same question can be posed about hulls and longboards and…but for > today i am really just curious why lots more people aren’t all over these > great little surf vehicles. thanks.

serious question: why aren’t they more popular? I couldn’t tell you why surfmats aren’t more popular. I’ve been riding Dale’s mats for the last 2 years and I’ve gotta admit that I’ve only used my hard boards about 3 times in the last 12 months. The mats are so comfortable and fun that I’m plenty satisfied. A previous poster mentions that he doesn’t want to learn a whole new skill, but I’m the opposite. I’ve ridden just about every vessel there is, and I’ve got a nice big quiver of hard stix, but frankly I was starting to get kind of jaded before I took to the mat. Now I’m like a kid again, and the learning challenge is a blast. If everyone felt the way I do, surfmats would be real popular.

Are you serious man? Truthfully, it is the thought of guy’s like this in > the lineup who scare me. Uhhhhhhhh, I think he’s being sarcastic.

Yowza, I’ve got it! I’m taking the wife and kids to Kaanapali (ugh!) in August 'cause they want to snorkle in the tepid tropical climes. Having stage 10 surfer’s ear, I’m good for two short snorkle sessions and then its under a palm tree for snoozing. Hey, what about a surf you say. The boogers and boards are out (an extra $150 each way!!!) so I am truely, deeply screwed. My wife breaks my revelry to complain that our little Lauren needs to have a floatation support device for her initial ventures to the snorkle zone. I wonder, what can I fit in a suitcase that will float the wife and kids to their octopusses gardens, and yet fulfill my overwhelming need for pulling a few g’s? Oh Dale, I think I can fill the toy kitty a little sooner than I figured… Newbs

Took the words right out of my Dad’s mouth, telling my mom, earlier. ?Or was it right out of my mom’s mouth,? Earlier, They both had this $#!+ something eating grin on their lower faces. How’s everything? I haven’t seen my parallel poster since the DUMB$#!^ Mr. Solomnson, I have saved up money for one of your fine crafted surf-mats. It’s for my dad for a Christmas present. I know it costs alot. That’s O.K. And, I know, He really likes you! I hear him telling my mom all the time, about this dedication stuff. I don’t want you to give me any deal on it cause I’m a kid or anything. It’ll make me feel good to pay you whatever you charge. My dad’s worth it, ever penny. He works hard and also helps us kids understand what real craftsman mean to our world. I can send you some money now or all of it if you need it. (P.S.) he’s 6’1" (I wanted to say 9’4") I’ve heard him muttering next to the bathroom scale 185, 185, 184, 182, 185, then some S words, ( I wanted to say 450pounds, and a size 24 shoe ) but that’s just his scary joking again. Where and when can I send you some money? I don’t want anybody in my family to know about this surprise until C Day. Thanks Mr. Solomnson, should I say in advance, or an advance. It’s past your bedtime little one

It’s past your bedtime little one Hmmmm… I think our “Little One” is probably 6 to 6-2", an athletic, 185 to 200 lbs., male caucasian, age 42 to 48 years of age, educated, successful and affluent, a multi-lingual, an internationally traveled professional, happily married with at least one child, an appreciator/collector of history and the finer things of life… and is at heart, nothing more than a thinly disguised bohemian… i.e., a raving, aquatic sensualist combined with endearing, child-like tendancies… Dale

serious question: why aren’t they more popular? really. i am genuinely > curious. besides the people that ride them why don’t more of the people > that read these posts want them? please be honest. dale will take it OK. I would like one if just to try it out. At $200+shipping+customs+taxes it a little to much just to try something right now. Plus I really don’t have too much time to surf and when I do I have so much to improve on my (standup)surfing. regards, Håvard

Uhhhhhhhh, I think he’s being sarcastic. I’m not too sure, newbs. Are you not seeing this guy in the water daily? In santa cruz they are unfortunately now a fixture.
