Me and my family are considering taking the ferry and spending a couple of weeks trawling around camping and surfing in N Spain this summer - BUT my wife’s friends have told her that the weather in N Spain is just too grim to camp…even said it’s as bad as UK’s weather…this true or are there areas that it doesn’t piss down the whole time.
Myself —I don’t mind bad weather as long as the surf’s good, my wife…Hmmmm…not so fussed on it.
This is Neira, from La Coruna (the northwest point of Spain).
Man, this weekend we had nearly 30ºC and I get my back and legs burnt since I was surfing in trunks.
Believe me, summer in northern coast of Spain are REALLY warm.
I love Galicia, but I must confess: Asturias is the best (for me) coast for surfing holiday. It’s a very clean and green region, food is great and affordable and the main road (not a toll highway) runs parallel to the coast, you can see waves breaking from the bridges while you’re driving!! Lots of campings.
BTW: One tip: the western you came, the colder will be the water. During July/August in La Coruna area you’ll need a shorty, while around Santander and Bilbao, they are surfing in trunks. But coming from UK, I guess thisi is not a problem for you…
Pics from Salinas, Asturias (near Gijon) last August, during Longboard Contest (this year 2005, will be held 30-31 July).
As Neira said I also think Asturias is the best area to surf in summer. Weather and water aren’t cold as in Galicia, you can find lonely beaches and very nice campings (free camping is forbidden). I spend two summers in Playa de la Vega camping (just west from Ribadesella), amazing beach with few people. Of course good weather is not assured and you can find some rainy days but I think it’s better than 2 weeks without waves.
Also yoou can find other activities like kayak in sella riber, caves with ancient paintings or mountain trekkings in ‘Picos de Europa’. No dout you will eat cheap and very good, people is very friendly and everybody will help you and tell the interesting places in the area.
If you don’t mind spending some time in your car, Galicia has a LOT of waves. Asturias is the place to go if you don’t want to spend too much time in your car and avoid crowds.
In Euskadi (Basque Country) and Cantabria you can surf in trunks. The western you go, the colder water gets.
When do you plan to come?
By the way, Mundaka wont be breaking in the next year or so… It’s amazing how many things we humans can destroy.
There’s a basic rule:
You begin on France, and traveling to the west, the further you go: water gets colder, crowds get smaller, food gets better and cheaper ( a matter of likes, no doubt), roads get worse, people is more friendly (in the water)…
I’m surfing in a 2mm short sleeve, long legs suit for the last months here in Galicia: never felt any cold.
Take some time and explore this link, it’s a map/satellite pic explorer for Spain. Just take the “lens” and zoom-in the area you want to view till the ortopic appears. It’s very useful for me for finding campings with walk access to the beach (not many, but they exist). Also, you can pick the “distance” icon up and measure how long you should walk with your board under your arm till you reach the water. Pics are not very recent, I guess 3 years ago.
One gem: Rodiles Rivermouth, in Villaviciosa, Asturias. An incredible left that would hurt your legs. I was there once and still have that session in my head. Be there soon in the morning, locals will crowd the point when they wake up. Then go out and drink some cold “sidra” and eat “fabada”. Big pine area over the sand, but you should dismantle your tent before it gets dark. Good site for vans, but not for tents.
BTW: it’s easy for you to buy a 2-part urethane foam kit?? I need one of these for a big delam fixing and it seems impossible to find it here in Spain. Please, if you could buy one and bring it with you…
I don’t know where this house or hangar is. But I can show you where I spend my weekends. It’s Corme, a little fishermans village in NW tip of Spain. Despite Prestige fuel dump some years ago, coastline seems almost recovered and when I’m there…man, I always say how lucky I am, this is “el putoparaiso” or “the fuckingparadise”.
The white little house marked on the right is my parents house. Can you imagine being at sea, while windsurfing, at listen to your mother shouting from the window “lunch is on the table and it’s getting cold!!!”
Just zoom out whole world first, then check “satellite” on top-right corner of screen, center the “world image” over the area you want to see and start to zoom in. Some areas have better quality than others, but pics are quite new 1 year or so, at least here over Spain.
