question? how to cutlap with opaque resin

Hi everyone

Another question from a rookie, I have looked around in the archives but I don’t have all the clues for a cutlap.

Bottom will be laminated with some opaque resin, I will do a cutlap.

Then I want to laminate the deck using opaque resin as well, my issue : how will I manage a proper cutlap when using opaque resin since I won’t see properly the line created with the masking tape once the lamination is done. I don’t know where to cut and I am afraid of cutting too far off from the first lap and then having to make a huge pinline.

Any advice more than welcome.

Someone posted this trick once: put a powerful lamp under your board and the masking tape will show through.

tnx for the info but I don’t even know how to handle that, I am planning on using opaque resin for the bottom as well. Isn’t there a easier way to handle that.

I actually thought about cutting the glass so it matches perfectly the deck area and doesn’t interfere with the first cut lap (bottom)

I thought about cutting a template, tape the first cutlap, lam onto the deck and then use the template to cut around or at least to leave a marking line with a blade into the lam (I will use epoxy), take the template off and then cut very nicely the lap.

I thought there would be an easier trick with opaque resin.

op,make a cutlap tool!!Search archives tools,or cutlaps.Pretty hard to fu@k it up this way!

Use 3-4layers of tape it makes a bump-line to follow for the cutlap.

Kick your resin slow so when you wrap the rails you have time to keep pulling the resin off the tape line and it will come out like this.I use the 3M green tape and never had a problem, as you can see this is all solid colors

i agree with lavarat. i lay down several (3-4) layers of tape. once it gels, just follow the ‘lip’ with the razor blade and you’ll have a nice clean edge to work with

Wow..this is very hard to explain. I learned to do real nice cut laps from Clyde Beatty Jr when I was working at his shop. I let my resin kick good and hard..but not too hard. I hold my razor blade almost flat and I pull the excess while guiding my blade along the tape line. If you are doing it correctly, the gentle lifting of the excess actually guides your razor blade right along the tape. Gotta go real slow on opaques. Like I said..this is really hard for me to explain. Maybe you can watch someone actually do it? Oh..and use NEW razor blades! Practice on clears and light tints. Nothing wrong with doing a cut lap on a clear board just for the practice and you can see what's going on.

I would like to thank everyone of you for helping out, it was not a a matter of being lazy but I did in fact search in the data base but it is not always easy to get all the angles.

For the first cut lap no problem since I will see the limit with the tape and line but it is the stage when the other side is laminated with opaque when you can’t see thru so I was kind of lost of to see the lines or whatever.

Thanks for all the clues.

hey leslie thats how huie explained to me as well

you pull the tape sideways toward the center of the board

and cut towards yourself with a new blade on its side
