Question ( mostly ) 4 aussies. Bunnings poly resin??

I need a small amount if resin for a hotcoat, about a litre, and i was wondering if i can use the fibreglass resin from bunnings? ( Budget home handyman shop for non aussies ). It has a pic of a surfboard on the bucket, so i think it should be ok. It also is right next to fibreglass matting and cloth, and catalyst, so should it be ok??.

When buying in bulk, i order from sydney, but i dont want to pay 15 bucks for it, then pay another 10 for delivery!.

I wouldn’t think of laminating with it, but, in this case, i stuffed up my hotcoat, and need to re do it, and just happened to run out of resin!.

P.S i have surfacing agent, so i should be alright in that area.

beerfan, its usually just general purpose stuff that is ok in a pinch but not really good. better off if you need a small amount is to go to a local shaper/glasser and ask if you can buy a litre or so.

I saw it and got excited, i just want to finish the bloody thing, and im out of resin!!!. I’ll have to order some more stuff soon for my minimal blank, so i guess i’ll just wait til then and get some proper resin. Bummer though, im so close to finishing its not funny, im just hangin to try it out. Thought it might be the same as lam resin, but, i’ll just wait. Damn!

Give the guys at Carrabine or Skipp a ring and see if they have any for sale. I think as you only want a litre, Skipp sell that over the counter anyway.

It’s worth a call anyway.

goodluck!!

Hey Beerfan

Go and see Col at Motivation Lines in Oak Flats.

He sells me odds and ends all the time.

Cheers

Hi mate,

Don’t use the Binnings Poly resin … please don’t.

  • It is general purpose resin suitable for patching boats / canoes / kayaks and then painting over

  • It does not contain the additives that make surfboard resin clear and UV resistant

  • It ends up with a yellow / brown tinge

I got the smallest pot they sell and used it for a test patch… not a nice result

As for the fibreglass they sell - havn’t tried it but they only sell it in 1m x 1m so not much good for glassing a board - ok for patching a ding or laying up fins I guess.
