Question on board size

Howdie everyone,

Hope you all are enjoying this nice Friday, it is looking very good down here in Florida!  I wanted to ask some advice from you shapers since you are able to create boards that really fit a person best.  I am 6’1" 195 lb and I currently ride an Al Merrick Flyer that is 6’1" x 19 1/4 X 2 3/8 .   I am looking at purchasing a Al Merrick Remix that is 6’1" x 18 5/8 x 2 3/8 thick.  I ride my flyer in the florida waves that are generally around knee high to overhead+ (overhead when the hurricanes finally roll in that is).  I can ride the flyer just fine ont he florida waves and can do some fun tricks and such.  On the channel island website it says I should ride the board a few inches taller than my height.  Please correct me here, but it seems that the Remix has about the same volume and would work more or less the same.  I am a novice when it comes to this stuff.  The flyer has a squash tail, and the remix has a rounded squash tail.

Since I can’t actually test the board out before I buy it, do you think I would have any problem riding that remix since I can ride the flyer just fine, or do you think I should follow the channel island advice and get a bigger one?  I am only asking because someone is selling a used one at a good price and it would be a lot cheaper than by a new one of course.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  This question may sound dumb, but I know you can offer a lot of guidance with your board shaping skills!

Rather then ponder the difference in widths of two boards made in the same concrete factory churning out hundreds of boards a week, why not go talk to a local shaper about cooking up something just for you?

listen to lcc. you are in a position now where you want to fine tune your surfcraft to your surfing, and what you hope to get out of it. Time to find a local shaper who you can speak with, and tweak aspects of your boards to suit different conditions, etc.

one word: quiver!

I might be wrong but my impression is that the Remix is a bit more foiled out than the flyer and that 1/2" of width is also going to be noticeable.  You’re a big guy and those dimensions in my opinion are too small for you.  That’s just a guess though. I’ve had flyers but I’ve only felt up the Remix in the shop so my impression is based upon that.   If you get can get board in your hands you should see how it feels, like whether or not it feels big enough.   It’s only a good deal if the board will work for you, otherwise it’s the opposite.  I’ve bought boards because they were cheap and regretted it.
