Okay, I am a bit confused. I’m getting ready to place my order to glass a board and I notice there is Laminating resin, sanding resin, and gloss resin. If my goal is to have a gloss finish do i need all three resins? I’m confused how this works.
OriginalSin,
Laminating resin produces a good bond between fiberglass and foam. However, it leaves a ‘sticky’ coating that is difficult to sand. Enter sanding resin, which has wax+styrene to thin it a bit and bring a harder, sandable shell to the surface. If you’re on a budget or are doing small batches, you can buy surfacing agent and add it to the laminating resin, which will thin it and make it sandable. No need to buy sanding resin.
Gloss resin is a whole different beast. There are tips in the archives for concocting your own, but a dedicated gloss resin will bring up the best shine for the lowest weight.
The archive has tons of info about mixtures, ratios. and percentages. Have at it!
